Default engine prep: cleaning

when you are building an engine, say you have a head and an intake manifold that have been sitting in your garage. How do you clean these things before you put them in a car. im sure dust and debris can get in the pipes of an intake mani, and i doubt thats very good for an engine to suck in that stuff , so there must be a method to clean it. and with a head, i dont know if youd want to use any type of chemicals to clean becasue they might mess with your seals. i dont know. inform me
