Default Transmission install problem...ok to run without dowel pins?

We're putting a 98 ITR tranny in my roommates GSR. The rear is mis-aligned by about 1/8 inch. The rear dowel pin is gone, and we can't get this ******* thing to line up. The tranny is flush with the motor, and I can get one bottom bolt (front) in, but it looks like the rear needs to be dropped about an 1/8 of an inch. I think the front dowel pin is fucked and want to remove it.

What's the worse that could happen with no dowel pins. Shouldn't all the bolts be sufficent to center the tranny on the motor?

bump - I'm kind of stuck here.

Also, we put in a new flywheel (fidanza) and clutch set.

We actually have an extra, but there no way it will slide into place. The rear of the tranny is about 1/8 of an inch off.

If we get the rear dowel to slide in, the front one is off. If we get the front one in, the rear one is off. It's always off by about 1 brown and curly.

It's friggin fustrating. Is it possible the clutch isn't centered? The fidanza flywheel doesn't have a pilot bearing, just a big hole.

id imagine you need to press/tap a pilot bearing in, otherwise the input shaft is gonna be on its own. might want to double check.

I had a similar problem but it was with the rear tranny mount, the last bolt wouldn't go through because it was off by 1/8 inch with enough messing around, we got it to fit... YOU NEED DOWEL PINS or it'll take you forever to line it up, you probably won't be able to do it.

Just start over, pull the tranny out, make sure both dowel pins are in.

It's the positioning of the tranny mounts that's not letting you line the tranny up, make sure the brackets on both mounts are somewhat loose, so you are better able to position the tranny, once it's bolted on, then you should be able to torque all the bolts down.

the dowel pin is there to help align eveything up. if everything bolts up then you it's not necessary.

have you ever installed a tranny? i've done it 3 times, once to replace stock clutch to aem HDSS and another to replace it to aem XTSS and again to install a new ITR tranny. Without the dowel pins, it would be near impossible to line it up, you'll probably damage the input shaft splines banging it off centre the whole time.

I've actually installed this same tranny three times on my old car (got it from a scrap yard and it leaked), and I've done two motor swaps.

I've never had so many problems installing it before. I'm kinda stumped. I think the clutch is mis-aligned.

I'll let you know tomorrow after I re-align it.

to my knowledge yes and you are not comprehending what i typed.
I said the dowel pins are there to help align everything up. It's not impossible to bolt everything up with out the dowel pins.

Default UPDATE--> It works. It works. It works. <--UPDATE

Howdy folks,

Update on the tranny.

Couldn't remove the rear dowell pin(it was no hotdog in a hallway, trust me), so we pounded it smooth, still no luck. Still the tranny was off by about 1/8"

After some thought, and some assistance from everybody here(including the big pipes of wreckedmyteg), I hit myself in the head and installed the pilot bearing in the flywheel. Realigned clutch. Baby went on perfect.

It wasn't until after the tranny was on that I realized the axle wasn't in all the way , but that's another story. https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=881461

Pictures soon...
