MUST Read if You Enjoy Having a Tranny That Works...
Okay, if you've read my topic about my noisy-*** tranny, then you're familiar. If not, here's the quick rundown:
My tranny has always had a SLIGHT whine with no load on it, so i figured I'd take the tranny and shim the differential because people have told me that's what's wrong.
so a few days ago, my tranny starts making LOUD roaring noises when accelerating, so I decided to tear the tranny apart and replace EVERY bearing and seal, and while it was apart, I'd go ahead and pop in the JDM 4.785 final drive.
THE TRANNY IS APART, AND I WAS EXTREMELY SHOCKED TO SEE WHAT THE PROBLEM WAS:
The counter shaft had FOUR teeth broken completely off of it! Luckily the teeth were stuck to the magnet, so no more damage happened from the loose teeth grinding around in it.
So how do I fix it? Well, all of the bearings are fine, and the diff is NOT out of spec, so guess what fixes it? The new final drive set. As you might know, the new fianl drive set comes with a NEW counter shaft, so LUCKY me - problem solved.
So what I thought was a selfish purchase in the JDM final drive actually ends up being the solution to my problem. How strange is that?
So finally, HOW in the hell does a counter shaft actually break? I drive the car hard, but recently I took it to the strip where it bounced hard all the way to the end of the track. I run an ACT Xtreme clutch with hybrid street disc.
My advise: be CAREFUL at the strip. I tried to get the best possible time, even if it meant bouncing like hell, so in the end I think that's what lead to the demise of my counter shaft.
Lucky for me I work at a shop and the labor is virtually free, but for those of you who would have to pay labor, you'd end up spending a CHUNK of change to fix that ****.
Anyone else ever heard of breaking a countershaft?

When I saw the teeth on the magnet, I said:
"Oh ****! I guess I'll be selling that final drive to buy whatever's broken."
Then when I saw the countershaft minus 4 teeth, and realized that the final drive came with a new one, I laughed out LOUD. You have to understand that when you ride with me, of course I'm going to give it hell. You're not riding with me to see how smooth I can shift, you're trying to see what the car will do. Same goes for whn you see me tearing *** when I leave the dealership you work at. you know what I mean. I'm not really all that hard on the R swap, but I must repeat this:
Be careful at the strip. That VHT on the track can REALLY **** your **** up.

Wait until you see my pics. It took some SERIOUS force to break the fat-*** teeth off of this countershaft. The pics of those SMOOTH 4th and 5th gears is obviously showing someone's lack of care when the syncros started to go out. Can't find them, grind them? oh wait, he found them and STILL ground them.
OH man.....
I'm starting to shake and quake in my boots ......I wonder what I'LL find when I pull my tranny.....
excellent info nevertheless....

you ight not have a lot to worry about unless your tranny is making a LOT of noise. mine went from fine one day, and then 2 days later it was louder than the engine.
