Default My Thrifty Paint Idea *NEED SOME EXPERT ADVISE*

Well Im hoping for some good advise here so Im hoping someone that knows a thing or two can help.

I am a noob to body work but insisted on doing everything myself. I got a body kit and installed it, didnt line up perfectly so I decided to mould it. I put about 3 layers of fiberglass on all joints, then BONDO, quite a bit of bondo actually. Got all the bumpers and everything pretty much perfect

I then looked at the doors, big rust holes and ****. So I cut out all the rust and am left with about 5 baseball sized holes in every door. What do I think it the best way to fix it? FIBERGLASS. I layed a big *** sheet across the entire doors, 2 layers thick, and then bondo. Again a fair ammount of bondo. My side moulding were now shaved as well.

SO I get it all sanded nice and smooth with 320 grit and use bono spot and putty filler for the small little pinholes. I went to the hardware store and just bought some generic black primer and taped off the car and coated it just so I could drive around in a 1 color car while doing safety and emmissions and such. Thats were I am at now.

Is there any problems with what I have done so far?

Now if you go along the doo with your had you can feel small little humps, there not just up and down, kind of gradual because I must have held the sander there for a second to long. WIll this show in the paint?

AND now onto the paint.

Since this car is just a daily driver and Im basically poor after my motor blew.
I decided I wanted to spray paint the car. I havent done it yet but I want to shortly.

I was going to bring the car into the garage and block sand with 120/220/320/600 and hopefully the beginning lower grits will smooth out the bumps. Then I would go buy some automotive primer and spray the car with 2 coats and block sand with 600 grit again afterwards.

The paint I am looking to use is Duplicolors Gunmetal Metallic Wheel Paint.
I figure it sticks to wheels and looks nice as hell and is inexpensive and is the color I want, so Ill buy about 8 cans and make sure the car is very clean before I start to spray. Ill spray the car with about 4 coats.

CAN I SAND PAINT?? Like can I wetsand after just painting or clearcoat first?

Then Id buy some clearcoat spray paint, any brands recommended?

Id really like some insight on my situation and I need to get this car on the road because full time work starts shortly. Hopefully some body tips as well as some tips for successful spray painting will be posted, thanks

Ya the only place I really looked for a sanding block was a local hardware store called Rona, I picked up one like 5 inches long, Im assuming youre talking like 1foot?

Any ideas to help on the paint? Can I do it like I stated minus the sading the base coat? I was just guessing on how much paint I should buy, its onyl like $5 per can so its cool. Ideas on how many coats? Good brand of primer?

I thought I remember someone or store making a nozzle for paint cans that's basicly gunshaped [trigger type] and, a better patter than the old button nozzle...

Yeah I dont have pictures

How many coats of paint are usually done with a paint job? Im assuming I can do about 3 for it to look nice, just need a good brand of primer.

I have a few can of Duplicolor Wheel Clearcoat, will thatstuff work?

you can get these at wal-mart

i spray-bombed my g2 using walmart flat black and for the whole car on one coat it took about 6 cans, so you might need to get more than 8 cans if you want four coats, remember, your car is big and spray cans are not!

good luck

Well today I went to my local hardware store were my buddy works (**** is free lol) and picked up 3 nice size sheets of 40/80/120/220/320/400/600, I also got a sanding block 9" with a nice easy to use handle.

I also priced out all the paints

Primer - $3.49/can
Duplicolor Metallic Gunmetal - $6.99/can
MotoMoster Autobody ClearCoat $5.99/can

So this isnt going to cost me over $125, only problem was they only had a few cans of each. Paint was at Canadian Tire so I cant get this stuff for free

Forgot to look for a shammy cloth to wipe the car before painting

This is gonna be fun

Before and After pics will be defientely taken to show some doubters or make me feel like an ***, but I think its going to turn out just ******* great

Any paint tips are greatly appreciated. Car will be sanded and perfected this weekend and painted next.

AND my graduation of high school present was my mother giving me $500 towards this paint job, now I can pay for the paint and get some extra goodies added to my alarm when I get it installed

You're getting shafted if you pay 7 bucks a can for DupliColor wheel paint.

And don't leave it primer for very long, if it's actual primer it will absorb moisture and you'll have rust problems all over again.

my fear is moisture into the primer then adhesion problems later on down the road.

u wouldn't suggest the gunmetal wheel paint but its your car, i would do maaco before that. but every little bump will show up in paint.

and your looking for a tack cloth, not a shammy.

Oh its called a tack cloth? I thought they used a normal shammy

Reason why the paint is 7/can is because its Canada I guess

The paint will sill look nice though right? Im not looking for oem quality but dont want it to look like it was quick spraypainted.

I think 2-3 coats of this paint and 2 clear coat would be perfect, wiping the car with the cloth after every coat.

Should I let the paint sit for a while after each coat? Because by the time I get to the other side of the car and back to where I started it will be dry. Should I push it out into the sun to bake?

And the comments about moisture into the current primer, the car is in a heated garage and its been fairly nice weather out

well today I sanded the area that you could feel the bumps (both door and left side quarter panel) with 40 grit and 80 grit and you can already feel the bumps practically gone, so by the time I get to 600 I think theyll be done for sure.

I only had 90 min or I would done more

All sanding being done with a 10" sanding block

Well I just read through a **** lot of threads that I searched.

Most people were actually wetsanding after each coat of actualy color paint

I also read that a lot of people were wetsanding with 1000-2000 grit paper.

I thought wetsanding with 600 would be good, no?

Ill probably be doing 3-4 coats of clear, depends on what it looks like I suppose

Thats my only worry, Ive done all my body work in this garage so there is quite a bit of dust.

I might just try my best with come compressed air to blow everythign out of the garage and dump water all over the ground

What is a tack cloth? Is it staticly charged or something?

Will you be using one of the handles to go on the spray can, so that you get a even spray?

Well I went to my local Canadian Tire and they didnt have one of these attachments.

I was thinking I would do just fine without it and normal spray
