Will a DOHC ECU work w/ a SOHC motor?

no, fuel maps are wrong, abscense of dual runner intake manifold on the SOHC that the P72 will be looking for, knock sensor that the P72 will be looking for, crank flux sensor maybe, not sure if the P72 looks for that.

That's the reason right there.
But it's okay if you need the car running for a short period of time to get it somewhere like to another garage/home/etc.
I did that a few times. Car runs a bit funny.

IF you have a choice use the P61 over the P72. If the car is OBD1.
A) Because the P61 WON'T look for the IAB's. (B17's don't have them)
B) Because the P61 is for a 1.7L which is only slightly larger than the 1.6 SOHC.
C) Because the P61 was only OBD1.
