What Radar detector to get and where?
I got a ticket last week for doing 41 in a 25 and lately I have noticed there are cops everywhere. I live in Va and I have a older radar detector but I want to get a good one. I know they are not legal in my state and I don't know where to buy one. Any ideas of which one to get and where?

Before you buy one, check out: http://www.speedzones.com/
A very informative site. Make your decision, then compare prices on mysimon.com and ebay. I found that ebay has the lowest "buy now" prices available.

Right on Satitus, V1 is good, but pricey. Check out http://www.speedzones.com for all the info on radar detectors.
Just curious, why do you pick the escort 8500 over the bel 980? I see little/no difference between the 2 and the bel 980 is usually a little cheaper. Am I missing something or do they both basically perform the same functions with similar sensitivities?
I don't know first hand how the bel 980 performs, but reviews that compare the two state that the passport is more sensative with less false alarms. The V1 only out performs the passport in rear detection, but otherwise falses too much.
Aren't radar detectors illegal (regardless of the Constitutional vagueries this represents) in the Commonwealth?
In any case... all the tests in the world won't beat real-world success.
Valentine1 - accept no substitutes.

Kudos for the info man...very appreciated
I can attest the my escort 6800 has saved my hide more than once...
Driving with a sportscar with a detector is like screwing a ***** with a condom. You're not 100% protected but your risk is drasticaly reduced.

LOL!
In the great H-T spirit, I'm co-opting that into my signature!
V - who drives like a maniac everywhere, gets about 20mpg, and no speeding tickets in the last 3 years

V1 may be good, but you need a remote radar detector, or you'll never use it. I think only 2-3 companys make them, and I don't know which is better.
As far as buying it, ebay is the easiest being that you're in the lovely state of VA. I also have the name of a place in nova that will install it for you if you want.

Dammmm, check out how the fabled V1 did compared to bel and escort!!!
Looks like the escort has a remote audio/vis display. That is where my money is going.

Well, you can keep your Passport 8500, ill be happy with my V1. Ive read lots of tests on radar detectors where they bitch about the V1, and say it doesnt have good features, and blah blah. Maybe it doesnt do as well as some in controlled tests, but in the real world, the V1 cant be beat. Speaking from experience, the V1 is the best detector you can buy, without question. Not only is it unbelievably sensitive, but it tells you where the radar is coming from. Oh, and about the V1s not being updated in ages? Well, considering you can send it back and get the latest software on it, id say its updated more than anyone elses. SOrry for the long post, but im sick of people who have never even used a V1 saying how crappy it is. V1=
V1, V1.
I think I remember reading somewhere that radartest.com was owned by a former Cincinnati Microwave employee.

I doubt your going to find anyone who will say the V1 is crap. It is a good detector. All the tests say is that it isn' the best. How do we test these different detectors in the real world? Are you going to buy the "top five" and speed to test them out? I doubt it. For the price and performance, it just looks like the V1 is inferior, according to those tests. If anyone has real world personal comparison experience I would love to hear it.
You guys need to go to epinions.com...where some guys have taken the V1, passport 8500 and bel 980 on a trip around town. summary of results:
passport 8500 outperformed the other two by a little bit in all categories except rear detection, which was won by the V1. The main complaint on the V1 is it's susceptibility to false alarms. The 8500 is "smart" enough to weed out the falses.
