JL 10 and 12
my friend wants to know if a 10 and a 12 would work good together.. Rather than two 10s or two 12s. Cause someone said they sound pretty good b/c They would take different types of bass and sound good together.
no...that would sound terrible...
The sound created by each has very different charecteristics and often will start to cancel each other out partially in most cases. You're better off going with a single 8" than those two subs combined. *lol*
Not to mention the difference in how power is consumed, what the resonant frequencies of the drivers are, the volume of air being driven...etc...
Please do me a favor and smack the **** out of whoever said it would sound pretty good...maybe it'll learn him to STFU.
I would suggest sticking with one or the other...or just go with two of one if he really needs two subs. Also, try to avoid mixing brands and series of subs too...if he wants a second sub he should match the first one exactly!...HTH!

I disagree^^^^^^It would sound fine if each sub had its own enclosure and amp. They will cancel each other out at some tones but it will also get some tones that the other will not. Both together will be better than just one or the other
I would only agree with that if the 10 was being used only as a midbass driver...but I don't know why anyone would do that?
If both are being used as 'subs' then I stand by my points completely.
If that IS what he's going for get a 12 or two and a pair of 8's in the kickpanels...sure would sound a lot better than a 12 and 10 stuffed in the trunk.

To do this, you would need two seperate amps for each sub, and each sub would have to be sealed independantly. I seen a truck with two tens, and two twelves, and it sounded prettygood. I also had a friend who had a flee market setup with one 15 and one ten in the same box, with one amp. THe 10 slapped really hard, and the fifteen didnt do anything at all. SOunded horrible. IF you set it up nice, it might work.
Well I understand the concept, trust me. I'm just saying that using a 10 for midbass is a complete waste.
By using eights or 6.5 midbass specific you can fit them in kickpanels where they will be able to add to the front effects. Putting any speaker playing directional sound in the trunk is a waste of time, effort, and money...
I just see no point in putting a midbass driver in the trunk with a sub...

Generally, putting a midbass only driver in kicks is a waste too - you should put midrange in kicks as you minimize PLD's. Path length difference is most critical to midrange, not midbass....

Phat Jax is right on this one. Ask any SQ pro and they will tell you the same thing. Using different sized subs is not a good idea. Kinda sounds like an idea me or some of my friends would've had in high school.
well actually it might sound fine i was once running two different subs in two different type of enclosures. one sealed one ported and it suprisingly had great sq along with sick sql. i would recommend sticking with 2 of teh same sub thou im running 2 12s currently
