HI FLOW CAT TALK
yes i am a bit of a newb. i own a 93 vtec prelude and would like to know the following? Is there an advantage to buying one of those fancy looking HI FLOW cats on the market. Or is it just as useful to gut out the stock cat turning it into a HI FLOW. Is this even possible and how would it be done. Not to mention if possible then would gutting the existing cat give a smooth interior surface for my exhaust gases? If a HI FLOW aftermarket would be more efficient than gutting my existing one, what is the top three brands to buy? Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks!!
Why would you wanna buy a Hi-Flow Cat for, You might as Well just get a straight pipe. I was planning on buying a High Flow Cat, but there really was no point to. So I just went ahead and got a straight for my lude. Beleive it or not I still Passed emmisions...
i forgot to mention that in the options but sounds good to me ... no emissions in oklahoma LOL so i dont have to worry about that. anyhow, how do i go about getting a straigt pipe. i imagine muffler shops cannot do this as removing the cat is illegal is it not. thanks again !
Im going straight pipe simply because the aftermarket high-flow cats will eventually fall apart and clog up everything. The stock cat is about $400. These aftermarket ones go for as little as $80. The quality is just not there.
Aftermarket cats only fall apart if you have a poorly tuned car. As the majority of the reasons why it fails falls under two categories. 1. Your EGT is way too hot. or 2. You're running way too rich and fuel gets caught in the cat and ignites.
In the end just get a cat (recommend carsound, I have one gonig on 2 years), not only are you polluting 100x less, you have a car that you don't gag from in your garage and it doesn't sound like a fart can. Also, in the end a test pipe actually only flows a few cfm more than a cat. Which you won't take advantage of unless you really tweak out (build the block) the thing.

thanks guys ... thats what i needed to know. my car has a really great sound with the powertech muffler im running on it know and i dont want to lose that for a ricer lawn mower sound. looks like im sticking with the aftermarket HI FLOW. will check out carsound. Any other suggestions on brands.

i'm running a test pipe with the greddy evo and it sounds really good. defintately not raspy. it sounds like it did with the stock cat except louder and better. i paid 30 bucks for my on ebay and it bolts right on. even comes with an O2 bung so you dont throw any codes.

having a real high flow cat is good in a way, because it will get rid of the restrictive stock cat, yet there will still be a cat unlike a gutted cat or a fake looking cat that really is just used for a straight pipe. most of all, it will get rid of that rotten egg exhuast smell people have that dont use a cat. sounds nicer also.
I would check out powercore "race cat" from landspeedracing.com I have one on my 95(h22) it did not seem to change the note or sound of the exhaust, but the volume increased slightly. The powercore"cat" isn't a cat, but a bullet style resonator with some packing(straight through with a perforated core just like the muffler on my GReddy SP cat-back) I forget exactly how much, but I think it was like $120.
that's called a resonator, it is different from a cat.
a resonator just helps reduce the annoying tones of exhaust from being heard by letting them resonate, while a cat actually prevents pollution from being spread.

I'm aware of that, but if you order one from landspeed, they(and i'm assuming powercore) call it a "race cat". (or at least the guy I dealt with did)

I got my Carsound hiflow cat for $100. I went from a test pipe with Tanabe Hyper Medallion to 2.5" hiflow cat and full mandrel bent 2.5" exhaust with a Magnaflow muffler and the difference in the power band was noticable. I noticed I had a little more top end compared to the Hyper. Overall that was the only difference other than the difference in exhaust noise.
