Default Why Honda's are so bad on Transmissions?

Before I ever had a Honda, I used to hear nothing but good things about how Honda's are great cars and they last forever. Since I bought mine, my transmission was acting up etc. Now, I've heard of a lot of them acting up. I guess it was all hype with these cars. I love my car but I guess I had my expectations up too high.

and also some people just drive wrecklessly, forever flooring at everylight, dropping the gears like its a manual, etc etc...
take it easy and drive a little normal and the tranny should last ya a good 150k or more before any signs of wear

With the exception of the 6th gen V6 trannies, honda autos are pretty damn good.... -IF- you keep the fluid clean. Being that there is no filter (at least on some of them, not sure about all), it is very important to keep it clean. Honda autos are very very picky about staying clean. Heat is also one of the biggest killers of auto trannies, so if you're always running it hard with no cooler, then your tranny is gonna fry. You'd be suprised too, it only takes about 40 degrees above normal operating temp to totally fry an auto tranny. If the fluid is regularly changed (like it's supposed to be) and you don't drive it hard without a cooler, then honda autos last a very long time. There's an 87 Accord sitting in my driveway right now with 302,000 miles on the original auto tranny, and it's never once been touched except for regular fluid changes since new. Still shifts like new.... firm yet very smooth, and doesn't slip one bit. My dads SE-i is at 155,000 miles and it too shifts beautifully. Neither of these trannies show any signs of slowing down anytime soon.

Just keep the fluid changed and they last just fine

Thanks guys for all your input. But now i'm going to ask a stupid question....LOL What is a tranny cooler? I never heard of that. I would like to purchase it if it's going to make things better. I just got my trans flushed at Honda where they did almost 90% of all fluid.

A tranny cooler is like a mini radiator attached to the front of the radiator that allows tranny fluid to transfer the heat to coolant, in turn the heated coolant dissipates in the radiator like the rest of the coolant in the engine. Basically, it transfers heat from the tranny in the fluid to the coolant to be dissipated.

the stock tranny cooler at the bottom of the radiator gets heat soaked fast though and adding a small aftermarket unit is not bad insurance at all.

my 2001 4 cyl automatic with 34k miles just had the engine light come on & D4 tranny light started flashing.
The RPM's went up but the car went NOWHERE..
it SLOWLY started to move and now when i first start it the rpm's go up and it slams into first.

YES, i wonder why HONDA"s are so bad on Transmissions too.
I'll find out what the deal is after i drop it off to honda dealer.

the reason why you hear about it is cause you are on a honda board that is about performance performance. we drive our cars hard, when you do this it can put more strain than what the tranny was designed for. this is especiallu true for auto trannies. i'm sure if you drove an auto tranny normally like the rest of the honda average honda owners you wouldn't have a problem, except for the known tranny issues with the 6th V6 and the Sport Shift trannies.

So the J30A1 is the problematic transmission? I would also like some info on a tranny cooler. Just bought the V6 and now I am starting to get a bit worried.

I do agree with the point made by KGAccord though.

I've got 248k on my 91 Accord and it still shifts perfectly fine. You have got to be strict with maintenance...if you don't do the changes with your fluids, things will start breaking...that goes for any car, not just Hondas.

I want to buy an oil and tranny cooler, do you buy them as universal parts or are they to spec, cause I know that greddy makes an oil cooler for 5th gen accords but not for 6th, could I use that.

The last 3 cars I've owned were Civics. In my opinion Hondas are amazing durable cars until my most recent one which I unfortunately made the mistake of buying an automatic. The transmission has been absolutely bitter to me, I am about replace it with fresh atf and a new filter hoping this works. I was curious about flushing it but I've read some bad things about flushing, so I wanted to ask what have some of you experienced from transmission flushing? Is it worth doing?
