Default A couple Q's, braking/steering.

OK, first off,
whenever I brake my car shutters/rumbles,
feels like abs or something, except the car is nowhere near breaking loose.
And it seems to go away once the brakes are warmed up, then they work great.
anyone have a clue on this?

Also when I make long sharp(like parking lot Uturn style) left turns,
my right suspension makes a sort of howling/whining noise,
everything functions well, just that sound is disturbing, cv boots look fine, do you think it could be my axle? It sounds kind of like a table saw sort of.

thanks in advance all you HT wizards!

P.S. this is a 92 cx with 150k on it, all stock mechanically,
well it has suspension now, but it made the sound when turning before I put the suspension on.

well your first prob sounds like it could be warped brakes or out of round tires. It's odd that it goes away when you warm up the brakes. First thing i'd do is retourque the wheels and go out and rape your brakes and see if it straightens it out. If that does'nt work you might wana take it to a tire shop. Your second problem sounds like a bad wheel bearing, could be the axle too, but since your boots are ok I'd look at the bearing first..........hope that helps.....................John

thanks john,
wheel bearing huh? well thats one step to a solution! I'm assuming the wheel bearing is in the axle??
Basically I think I prettymuch need to figure out if this would be something in the axle itself, or if it could be in the steering or suspension or SOMETHIN, i duno.
reason is, i'm doing a motor swap soon, so if its the axle i'll just stick in another while i'm down there.

About the brakes,
seems every honda i've ever been in has had wobbly brakes.. my last one had warped rotors(the hotter the more wobbling) and my friends 99dx wobbled too.
I'm very particular about my lug nuts torqued properly, so thats not the problem.
I just blew out a tire btw.. heh.

Rotors can also warp when they get really hot then cool down fast. My Accord had nasty rotors from that.

check your brake fluid for contamination, also re-bleed them if necessary. Check to see if any of you calipers are seized. A dead give away is excessive wear to one side of a pad/rotor. Shuddering under had braking can also be a combination of worn out suspension and bad tires, so check those components as well. The grinding during cornering sounds like a typical shot wheel bearing. jack the car up and check for excessive top to bottom play.

Ok thanks,
i'm looking up the wheel bearing in my manual right now.
Hows replacement on that ? tough ?

My brakes dont shudder under hard braking,
its mostly light/medium braking, when they are cold, well I guess they might do it under hard braking too when cold.. but I usually dont brake hard when they're cold so I duno.

sorry I also forgot to mention your noise when turning could be a pwr steering pump going out, but I think it's less likely than the bearing because if it were the pwr steer pump I would think it would do it turning both ways. I also had a prob a long time ago my 17in toyo proxes would feel wobly when cold and as they warmed up they smoothed out, just a thought. On the brake issue, I'm pretty religios about my wheel torques too but all my hondas have warped brakes and all have seen auto-x time which leads me to believe that all honda rotors warp if worked hard whether torqued properly or not. Try driving down the road about 40mph and pull the e-brake(doesnt have to be too hard) and if the car lurches you know you at least have warped rear rotors. For the fronts if they are warped the steering wheel should move back and forth when depressing the brake pedal and it's usually worse under light braking..........sorry if I'm being redundant, I'm just a vw tech .........................John
