Default Car overheating, got code 6 (coolant temp) and smoke, timing related?

Long story short:

Car overheats, smoke from under hood, code 6 coolant temp, could it be because my ignition timing is too advanced? Any other ideas?

Full Story:
Ok, the reason I ask if it's timing related, is cuz the only thing about my car that I've changed recently has been the ignition timing, I put it at full advance, hoping to get my car to stop stalling so much (didn't work btw). I haven't set it back yet.

Today when driving to my destination my car ran fine, I got there, turned a sharp corner, and slowed to a stop in a parking spot and then white smoke billowed out from under the hood. I got out, popped the hood, obviously coolant. I gave the smoke a minute to clear and found coolant under the dizzy, looked like I mighta had a hose spring a leak. Well, under further inspection after letting it sit for 2 hours, I found that one of the hoses came unhooked basically. So I put it back on, the clamp didn't look like it was ever on tight enough (the engine was swapped a few months ago, coulda been something we overlooked?) maybe some extra presure finaly made it pop off?

Anyway, I fixed that, and the car ran fine again, no smoke etc.
I drive home tonight, about a 20 minute drive. About 2 minutes from home my CEL comes on. I notice no abnormal sounds, so I just press on those 2 minutes and get her home so I can inspect with plenty of light. I check the ecu, code 6 which is coolant temp, duh, kinda obvious with the white smoke.
So I check the hose, still clamped fine, doesn't seem to be any leaks anywhere. I can't even figure out where the smoke was coming from.

So my question is right now, could the change in advancing the timing cause my car to run extra warm? I don't think I've driven the car much since I advanced the timing, so I can't say it overheated because of just that. Tomorrow I'm going to back down the timing a little, just to be safe. I don't think I got the car much above 4000rpm today.

Any other ideas? I'll check more in the daylight for leaks etc.
Another thing. I'm not sure my fan ever turns on, that is, with it sitting warmed up, I don't remember ever seeing the fan running. Is there a specific relay I should be looking for? I've read it's not with the other relays, it's seperate. Can someone shed some light on that?

Thanks

edit: did a little searching and found that advancing the timing can cause more heat, so i'm going to back it down. maybe it's cuz i have my ignition timing at full advance and my cam advanced a couple degrees (ran crappy with retard, ran much better with advance) I'll back it off and give it a shot, as well as trying a few things with the fan to make sure it's working right.
Any info is still appreciated, thanks
