do i lose hp if i take off the silencer box off of the air filter? people tell me my engine will get too much air and hotter air which makes it lose hp...

 

The temp of the air, makes less of a difference than volume.

 

Don't take it off, all it does is make more noise and it doesn't help anything. I have heard from some people that it has hurt their performance. Honda designed it the way it is for a reason...

blah that is wrong, I dyno tested this w/ my own car, it made like 4 whp 3 ft/lbs. and did not lose any power anywhere on the rpm band

 

Hotter air is less dense than cold air. Which is one reason why people run cold air intakes.

By removing the top off the air box you are more likely to suck in the warm air from the engine bay.

Dynoing a car with the hood up is not the same as running the car for an extended period of time with the hood down travelling at speed.

I agree

 

And just guessing that the engine will ingest hot engine bay air is just that - a guess. I have not measured the intake air temps in an S2000, but in four other vehicles, after the vehicle moved about 100 feet the intake air temperature was within 7 degrees or less of ambient. Movement flushes out the hot air ( which can get to over 150F when stopped for a light ) with ambient air.

BTW, a 4 hp difference on a dyno may not be any difference at all. Was the test done the same day? Same dyno? Same air temperature? Was the data raw or corrected? Four hp is within the error margin for most dynos, so unless the dyno tests were carefully performed, we don't really know if there was a gain, loss or no change. BTW, exactly how much horsepower is "like 4 whp" anyway?

hurts your low end.

 

yes it does hurt the low end. the car feels like a dog with the airbox off.

 

I took the cover off, after about 5 mins the car seems to slow down.

dyno and real life is different as someone stated above...you draw in hotter air when this is off...run the car on the street like the many others who have tried this and then decided it hurt performance...or is your car engineered differently than the other 40K+ s2000's out there?
