Coilovers with standard shocks
Hey, Ive got 60mm lowered springs in my eg sedan but I want to go lower, So im thinking of going for Skunk2 coilovers.
Just wondering what the story is with standard shocks. If I go for the coilovers with keepers, will I still be able to adjust it really low? or will the standard shocks restrict how low I can go?
Will I be better off with coilovers without keepers?
Here is the ride height at the moment (for those who dont understand mm measurment). I want to keep it at this height for daily driving, but wind it down quite a bit occasionally.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Cool. Have you had to make any other adjustments to go that low (shortend stuts etc)? or just bolted in the coilovers, wind them down and thats it?
Anyone else?
Anyone else?
how long has it been, surprised the stockers didnt give out yet. the lowest i would go with stock shocks is .5-.75 inch. my boy didnt want to listen to me and dropped 2.5 inches on his stocks and it blew in couple weeks. and it rode like ****. do you plan on getting aftermarket shocks? if you do and don't care about the stock shocks. drop it on the stocks if you wanna be dumped that bad and start saving for new shocks. but be prepared to bounce around, and careful not to mess up you header or oil pan when hopping around
I would only have it really low occasionally, but have it with the tires just under the guards for daily driving.
Im not to worried about ride quality at the moment, because it wont be used on the strip or track, its just as a street car.

i had skunk2 coilovers with stock shocks and rode on them for about 2 years.
i was dumped 3-3.5 inches all the way around and had an okay ride.
picked up a set of kyb agxs about a year ago and the difference was like night and day. the ride is so much better with aftermarket shocks/struts i couldn't believe i went 2 years without them.

so why arn't you worried about ride quality??
anyways... get some nice struts to go with you skunks... or get some TIEN's or JIC's.

Maybe I worded that wrong. Im not worried if the car doenst handle the best, im not going to be flying around corners or anything, my car isnt being used anywhere except the street. Ride quality will only suffer when the coilovers are wound right down, which will only be occasionally.
Thanks for the replies, The only question I have to ask now, is whether you guys who have dropped your cars on standard shocks have coilovers with keepers or without?

Two problems with stock shocks and sport springs or coilovers. One is the spring rate itself. Generally these springs rates are way to high for the shocks to handle them. Second is the loss of shock travel...bottoming out the shock.
You can fix the latter easy enough (well more like a band-aid) by increasing the shock travel. This may not be the cure all for you as aftermarket shocks would be the best bet and only run you as low as 200 bucks.

Good Luck!
BTW Dont think you or people around you aren't in some danger if your driving on blown shocks. If you needed to make any kind of quick adjustment while driving your car would not be able to react...at all. Plus you will be one of those guys people look at funny when your car is bouncinG down the road. So Im going to stress the point of putting on some aftermarket shocks and increasing your shock travel.

I had skunk2 coilovers and tokico illuminas (for sale now) and the ride was pretty rough. Even with shocks it wasn't that smooth. I guess it's the setting. If you don't have the springs set to the same height all around it can really kill your shocks and your tires, depending how low you go.
Thanks alot for your help guys.
I will eventually look at getting aftermarket shocks, but in the mean time Il buy the coilovers, and Il be careful not to lower them to much, Only on the odd occasion where I wont be driving long distances. Il have it set quite high for daily driving, which should save my tires, and the shocks, even if the spring rate is to high.
94_hatch - If they're not captive when jacked up, it means you dont have keeper springs.

Just so you know, the ride isn't going to be all nice and cushy with coilover springs because the springs are linear instead of progressive like most lowering springs. I have Ground Controls and KYB AGX's and the ride is good, but it is quite firm and takes some getting used to. It is a good bit rougher than just having lowering springs. I just wanted to point that out so it doesn't come as a surprise. And I don't think I would slam the car on the stock shocks because when I first installed my setup I had it cranked down pretty far the first day and it rode pretty bouncy even with the AGX's. Right now I have the fenders sitting right at the tops of the tires and it rides great. Good suspension and handling owns! Good luck.
I recommend tein, or any good brand shock like tokico, or koni, i got on my 99' Si and whoa it makes a world of a difference. I had APC coilovers on my 93' Ex and dumped it on my stock struts and after about a week or two the ride went downhill from there. The difference is worth the money.
Thanks for the replies
Would 96 ITR shocks be ok with coilovers? (over standard eg shocks?)
I can pick some up really cheap.
I know aftermarket ie.koni would be better, but like I said ^^ I can get them cheap and if they will help the ride quality and handling it could be worth it in the long run.
Sorry about the noob questions, im pretty new to suspension tech.
