lift is the amount of opening the valve opens.
duration is how long the valve stays open, the bigger the duration the more the valve stays open to allow more air to get into the chamber. Duration is how long in crankshaft degrees the valve stays open.

When lift and duration are increased to lets say 12.5mm and 273 degrees duration you need big compression like 12:1 cause when the valve opens that bleeds out the compression in the cylinder.

Hope that helps.
