Default Possible Misshift, What now?

Going for the 3rd to 4th shift and I may have caught 2nd. The shift was at about 8,000 rpms. What do I listen or look for in regards to bent valves or a fried clutch. Thanks alot

P.S. Fuuuuuck me!

Listen for ticking or lots of engine vibration. Rough Starts.

First thing to do really is a compression check

Hopefully you are luckier than I was after my misshift at the honda-tech track day at MidAmerica Motorplex last fall.

My damages were 6 bent exhaust valves and 2 intake valves, however, I've heard many cases where the misshifter was luckier than I was.

Larkin who was only in 2nd for about a 1/4 second before popping back into neutral than into the correct gear

well first what did the car rev to after the misshift and for how long b4 u caught it
this girl i know jsut did the same thing in her prelude went from 3rd to 2nd instead of 4th at 7500 rpm and casued the car to rev to about 10.5k she bent all her valves and a lot more she heard a lot of clicking after she did that so if ur valves are messed up ud hear clicking and she completley fried her clutch buy u should know if thats damaged b/c of difficulties shifting

I did this to my ITR once. 4 bent exhaust valves, fried clutch, & broken axle. Good luck...

It revved up to about 7-8K, but not quite sure. It all happened so quick, and now I'm kicking myself. I used to point and laugh at people who fucked their cars doing this, but it actually is quite easy. I need more input on this situation

Can you put that in english please?

Hopefully, rgoose, its only just bent valves. When i mishifted i had to do a whole new engine build+a new clutch.

not necessarily. I was shifting in a very calm matter, and my car went into gear like butta. My clutch has been fine 12,000+ miles after the incident, however my clutch is a much beefier than stock clutch (ACT XT/SS)

So just weird ticking, will it still drive???? Will there be a noticeable decrease in power?

Don't worry, I used to be one of the guys that said "how could you do that". Unfortunately, its fairly easy to do in the R as the gears are pretty close together.

your saying when you mishifted it only reved to 7-8k?
or was this the rpm before the mishift?

It seemed that way, but couldn't have been the case, it all happened within a 1/4 of a second.

I did the same thing not too long ago
I had bent 4 exhaust valves and drove the car for a good 3 months before i finally fixed.

when the time came to replace the valves, AJR discovered that i had 3 broken valve guides along with 4 bent valves

Just replace the valves wiht Rocket Motorsport Hgh CR valves.....good stuff for cheap

btw.....i even drove the car hard and raced it, it did better than i thought it would in the 1/4....14.5@94mph with J's intake and gutted interior

sorry to tell you, but its not "easy" to do in the R.

its all about your shift habits. depending on how you shift, it may be "easy" to do it.

My shift habbits are fine, I dunno if I even mishifted, I'm glad your shift posture is 100% but mistakes happen. <TABLE WIDTH="90%" CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0 ALIGN=CENTER><TR><TD>Quote, originally posted by HUBB &raquo;</TD></TR><TR><TD CLASS="quote">if it only went to 7-8k then ur straight....10.5k ur f****d......just do a compression check and listen for sounds..... </TD></TR></TABLE>

I'll have to grab some tools and check it out. I just took it for a ride and it seems kinda sluggish

So what type of #'s do you get on a compression test w/ bent valves?

I plan on doing a compression test tomorrow. If the test comes out good does that mean my valves are in decent shape or should I still be concerned?

if you bent any valves your comp will be probally 0psi, sometimes like 60psi. if it's really low you bent one or a few

Happens to the best of us
I went from 9,200 in third to 12,000??? in second at Palmdale. Went in like butter, but she screamed like a banshee when I let the clutch out. Busted two out of three of the straps on the pressure plate. Barely made it the 70 miles home. Pulled the head a month later and had some bent valves too. Car ran strong even with bent valves. I would pull the head just to be safe. At the very least compression and leakdown. Another way to check for bent valves is to check your lash. If you have some valves that are very loose, well, you know...

Thanks alot for the input.

I just took the R about 40 miles to dinner and it was running strong as ever. Also, I didn't hear any clicking, although my engine has been "slightly" clicky since day 1. A compression test tomorrow followed by a valve adjustment in the next week or so. I'm crossing my fingers .Thanks to all who helped
