My first post! What a wealth of knowledge, almost too overwhelming! I have a 99 EX and the automatic transmission is having difficulty shifting into park and reverse. Any thoughts? Also, when shifting into gear from park to drive, drive to reverse, park to reverse, etc. There's a clunk from the front of the car. It drives/shifts fine, I was thinking maybe a bad motor mount? Trans fluid is fine (level is fine, probably needs some new stuff in there) Thanks for al the help!!!

 

change your tranny fluid and it will probally fix it.

Maybe some GM synchromesh

He said auto trans though. Synchromesh is only for a manual I beleive.

I don't know too much about autos, but how many miles are on it? Maybe it could use a flush and filter.

When you say it's having trouble shifting, exactly how to you mean? Is it in the linkage, or is there a mechanical grinding or something?

 

When u push the button on the floor mounted shifter it won't go into park on the first try. You have to kinda move it back and forth against the park position (if that makes sense) to get it into park. Not overly hard, just have to bounce it off of whatever prevents it from going into park. Then it goes. A slight version of the same manuever is sometimes required to get it into Reverse.

I noticed that when driving you can shift from 1 to 2 and even into N very easily without pushing the button on the shifter. I think normally there is a "catch"? or something (you disengage when pushing the button) that prevents the shifter from going into R or Park when your driving. The problem is with the disengaging of this "stop" I would guess. I think I'll take apart the console this weekend and see what I can find.

I'm going to change the trans fluid this weekend also. So no Syncromesh in an Auto?

yeah there's an actuator type thingy that stops you from putting the car into park unless your brake is pressed and you're stopped. . . . . . . . if that makes any sense at all??

No, just go to honda and get some ATF fluid.

Ask the guy at honda when you go to get the ATF. I've never seen an auto without one, I don't see why honda's would be any different.

It sounds like the problem is with the shift lock / actuator, not your actual tranny. Check for anything loose, and make sure everything is good when you do your fluid change this weekend. I'd like to help a little more, but like I said, not much experience with autos. Pick yourself up a manual and try the troubleshooting section if at all possible.
