All Motor B16 Compression Questions
Ok I'll admit it I'm a noob for sure when it comes to working on cars. When it comes to driving that would be a whole different story. Anyways I'm looking at picking up a B16. Tech34 Racing INC. has a 85.0mm piston kit. Here are the specs:
Displacement with 85.0mm bore 89mm stroke = 2020cc
*custom machined buttons to support oil ring. this is how i can fit all that crank and rod in a b16a block. yes, you still retain the ls 1.54 rod ratio
*custom .708 lightweight tool steel wrist pin. rod must be rebushed to this from .826
*dedicated valve reliefs and lots of internal milling to reduce weight. piston weighs in at a mere 255 grams! most off the shelf 85mm pistons with this dome weigh around 315g.
*compression ratio is 11.5 to 1 with a b16a head unmilled and stock gasket.
*kit comes complete with rings-wrist pins-locks-buttons
*these pistons have reliefs that will clear cams up to 13.00 mm of lift.
Now Can you run 11.5.1 on pump gas? How much does it cost to sleeve an engine? Anything else I need to know? This seems like the perfect sleeper to me. Not only that but looks to my like it has big potiential! Let me know your thoughts.

You may want to read this article about stroking a ford 302 to 347, and what it says about running the piston pin in the oil ring.

thats essentially an lsvtec bored to 85mm.
for the price of a b16, ls crank, sleeves.
you could find a used ls block and crank, sleeve that to 85mm for less $$
of course getting forged rods and pistons.
id say its a waste sleeving and stroking a b16. more cost effective to sleeve and ls block. you get the same thing...
but, i would sleeve a b16 to 85mm, and keep the good r/s ratio. youd have a safe, high revving 1.8 liter... but again, do the same to a ls motor and you get more power from more displacement. i already have an ls motor, so thats what im going to do

Ok I read the Article. This will be a daily driver so that is something to think about. I'm looking to either stroke it to a 1.8L or 2L. At first I wanted to use a Jackson Racing SuperCharger but I'd blow the motor with this kind of compression. Basicly I'm looking to spend the least amount of money and get the most out of the motor, that's why I decided to save $1000-1200 and get a B16. Sure I don't have the tq but this will be a street/strip car (mostly Street) and I don't know if I'll ever use slicks. The loss in tq should help me hook up alot more. I'd like for a 12second street car but it's not going to be easy or cheap. 200-300 hp range is what I'm looking for. I'd Like to be in the 250-300 range though. What would you reccomend? Thanks in advance,
John

How much is an LS Engine/Tranny. I've been quoted $1300 engine and tranny for the B16 and $2300-2500 for the B18C. Now if I bored the LS and bought the VTEC head any idea on numbers I'd be pushing? The motor swap will be done in the next month or two so I'm trying to get everything down now. Thanks again,
John

theres no way to get anywhere close to 300hp all motor in a bseries motor.
250 can be done but it is hardly streetable.
200whp is more realistic, but it is expensive and requires most likely, a full rebuild w/ forged internals, cams, and other ****.
a bare ls block can be gotten for around 500 or so. you want the short geared vtec tranny if you can.
the numbers you get will depend on many variables: displacement, cams, I/H/E, Intake manifold. no one can tell.
but if you do build an lsvtec/b20vtec, make sure you read a lot and buy quality parts. no one can tell you what to get
my engine is still stock, sooo.... ive been on H-T way too much lately
11.5 can be run on pump gas. it is debateable about what is the max, but i plan on no more than 11.1:1 to be safe.

Ok I called Arias Pistons and talked with Tom J. He told me that the engine was streetable (the B16 2L). I also got some other great numbers from him. I have a place to Sleeve the engine. I'm going to use Splitting Imagez (Golden Eagle). Now who bores these engines and around how much will it cost? Lastly How much are the LS Cams and Crank? Thanks to all for helping me out. Remember I will be keeping the stock engine around so If any problems arise it's just a swap away.

No idea who has the kit. I really don't have a budget. It will be put together slowly though as I don't have the amount of cash to just throw down. It's going to take me 2 months to come up with the money for the B16 because I have a few more bills to pay off then I'm free. Then all my money will be sunk into the motor. If you know anyone with the kit I'd love to talk with them. From what I was told it will be one hell of a car to beat!

John,
Why don't you start out with an LS swap with a gsr or SiR transmission.
You can add cams, or a vtec head later.
You'd improve your chances of success, rather than getting into a motor build, and being out 4k before you even get the motor in the car.
Edit: do a search for 404 or 404s. You may be surprised at what a mostly stock LS motor with cams will put out...
