Default Alternator problems

A roommate of mine has a '90 crx si and his alternator is bad. So today we went to replace it but we couldn't get it out. It is completely unbolted but there isnt enough clearance anywhere to pull it out. I used to have an '89 dx and I swapped the alternator on that and we had to jimmy it under the IM and pull it out by the intake. I've heard the si's are slightly different and you have to drop the axle to take it out. Is this true?, or can we take it out by going under the IM? If we have to drop the axle, what size socket is it and any pointers on how to do it. I've never removed one before. Thanks.

I think you may have to remove the axle to get the alternator out. However, I've been able to pull the alternator out of my CRX with a B16 out from the top. Just had to remove the fuel pressure regulator, couple of hoses, clutch cable, and do some twisting and contorting. Much better than pulling an axle IMO. Might be worth a shot. The axle nut is a 32mm. If you have an impact gun, it would make it an easier job.

pull the axle out and let it hang with teh inner joint wedged in the fork so it won't fall out and get messed up. remove the oil filter and just slide it down. lots of room if you do it this way. really easy if you ahve a hoist at your disposal.

Get the car up on jackstands.
Remove the Drivers' side wheel.
Remove the alternator "Bracket" on the back of the block.
Unlock the steering.
Using a combination of flips, spins, and steering movements, it'll come out the wheelwell.

I just did this like a week ago. My lower bracket wouldnt come off cus one of the bolts was rusted and stripped, so i didnt have clearance from under the car. Unbolt the brake master cylinder, move it over behind the intake manifold, if you be easy with it the lines shouldnt break. From hear you should have a good amount of space to pull it out. Took me 5 mins to get it back in. Good Luck

My roomie tryed to take off the bracket but he said it was rusted tight. I'll try to give it a shot tomorrow but in case that doesn't work, won't brake fluid leak out everywhere if I unbolt the master cylinder?

Ok guys we got it. We just used a syringe to get as much brake fluid out of the master cylinder as we could, then we unbolted it and the alternator came right out. Thanks alot guys.

Yep, but if you have a different engine in your car like a b16 it won't come out like that , when you unbolt the master cylinder no fluid will come out.

i just did this on a 90 hatch,

just slide it across the firewall to the passenger side, then disconnect a few coolent hoses and intake tube, then pull it up through there.

all u have to do is unbolt the master cylinder from the booster...move it out of the way and pull it up through there...no messing with brake fluid or nuthin!

I changed mine on the side of the highway like that. put in the new alternator and belt, bolted back the master cylinder onto the brake booster, started the car and I was on my way...you guys like doin things the hard way!

Weapon knows where its at!
