Default EGR CEL question

Need some help guys. Here's the story. I was throwing a CEL, code 80: Insufficient flow in EGR valve/passages.

So I took it off, and sure enough it was very gunked up. Cleaned it up with some carb cleaner, reinstalled. Then instead of resetting the CEL by unhooking battery I decided to drive it for a while and let the computer do the diagnostic and turn the light off. That did not work, so I ended up just unhooking the battery. This turned off the CEL only very briefly, now the same code is back!

So the question is: Since I know the EGR valve is clean, does the persistent code mean it is defective? HAs anyone else cleaned theirs and not had the light turn off?

I know I can just block it off, but I am stubborn and want to fix this CEL.

Any help appreciated, thanks.

carb cleaner will not clean the ports. and carb cleaner is usually not o2 safe. use honda throttle plate cleaner.

if it is a fifth gen then you need to drill the port plugs on the runners. you need to drill a small hole in them and then pull them out with a slide hammer. your egr ports are under them. use a proper sized drill bit to clean the ports. when you are done go to honda and get egr port plugs for a 90-93 accord. they should stock them. tap in the new plugs.

if it is a fourth gen then you have to pull the manifold because for some dumbass reason honda welded over the ports on the runners.

if this confuses you in any way then you need to take it to a dealer or someone very knowledgeble about hondas.

Thanks for the info... just to clarify the vehicle in question was a 5th gen, and I used throttle body cleaner, not carb cleaner, not honda brand but hopefully still o.k.

I will bust out my helms and take a look at whats up to see how easy this process is to do. I think I can handle it though. Just a question first: How come 90-93 Accord port plugs are used to replace and not 97-01 prelude plugs? Any idea on the cost of those egr port plugs?

they are the same. but the parts dept. will know exactly what you are talking about if you tell them accord, where as if you tell them prelude they would get confused. just simplicity, thats all

Great thanks. Anybody else have any experience with this problem or the proposed fix?
