Whew....okay here we go.
A short shifter actually replaces your shifter, not just your shift ****.
I don't know anything about the 02+s but on the 92-00s the shift **** just screwed off.

i believe they are the same on the 04's but if not like the s2000 there is a nut on the shifter that you must loosen then just unscrew the rest of the ****, pretty easy. as for shortening the shift like said above, there is more tehn just shaving the ****.
i want to short shift mine... as in like makin the shifter it self shorter.. thast all not a whole short shift kit

You can take your shifter out and cut the top of it off and rethread it if that's all youre trying to do.

You could also just get an aftermarket ****. I have a Sparco ball, and it sits much lower on the shifter than a stock ****.

it will make your trows shorter but it will also make it harder to shift. that the whole idea behind short throw is to make both parts shorter

Werd, but it doesn't sound like he cares about the throw, only having it look lower.
BTW: My ball is weighted, and it feels great! Because it sits lower on the actual shifter, the throw is shortened a bit and the weight counters the loss of leverage. The effort (if you can even call it that) required to shift is actually less than stock.
Just my .02
