Shaved Door Handles,
Im in the process of shaving the door handles off of my 95 Del Sol, Any ideas from anyone aka should i do it or not and how should i wire them all up? If anyone else has done this and could give me some help i would apreciate it!, Ill do a write up when im done with pics this time! (Unlike my other posts)
shaving the handles by yourself? good luck! i dont think ive seen a write up yet, but ive seen a shitload of threads about it....just do a good old fashioned search
1: Have a back up method to get the door open that doesn't require electronics. Trust me, the poppers will fail, battery will die, or general failure will occur.
2: Get quality poppers. Every store around will try and sell you the DEI solenoids. Don't get them, they will fail. I went thru about 8 in a year and everyone who has them hates them. They have a weak pull and wear out. I strongly suggest getting the autoloc poppers.
3: You realize most tracks will not let you run without handles.
4: I have 2 vehicles with shaved handles, both of which were daily drivers at one time and I wouldn't recomend it for daily drivers. Cool at first but just turns into a hassle.

The way im werking this one of two ways:
1) Both doors will operate via the remote, (Unlock pulse will open the doors- Priority drivers pulse will switch the relay for the drivers or if i hit the second button it will also open the passenger door. Seems pretty cool the proplem is if i want to disarm the system to gain accease to the trunk. ill have to go and shut the drivers door everytime but i dont forsee that happening to often.
2)Only the drivers door will open with the remote, Ill have two exterior switches mounted on the drivers side behind the rear window on that molding that will only relase the doors while the system is un-armed (similer to a Ford Gto i belive) Im thinking this will be more practical and make the most sense for a daily driver.
Both systems will include having a second safty switch in the trunk allways live in case something goes wrong, aka bad remote, blown fuse, ext. It would be directly wired and give a point to have an extra battery for just the solinoid, (Battery is going to be relocated to the trunk at a later date - The original is too damned small for my sterio, ext.)
Any other ideas and opinions would be GREATLY apreciated, i already have the passenger side done, and it works pretty nicely. For what ever reason like everything i do im having second thoughts and need some more imput here before i to the point of no return and fill in the openings on the doors and weld everything............

What you gonna do when the solenoid fails or the wire comes unhooked? When I say you need a back up, I mean a backup that doesn't use the solenoid and doesn't require any electronics. Trust me, you will want a backup.
And why are you making it so confusing? Just get an alarm or unlock module with enough channels for each door? One channel for the driver, passenger, and trunk. And if you still want a button outside somewhere just wire up the remote locks. Then when the alarm is armed even if someone finds the button and pushes it the door won't open.

But how are you going to be stuck in your car with shaved handles? You realize that you still leave the inside handle hooked up right? Unless you are doing custom door panels that require the handles to be gone, you will still have the inside handle.

shaving almost anything on your car increases problems alot, especially if you dont know how and are doing it yourself, that will crack up and look like crap in about 4 months. Get it professionally done if you really want it.
I've had shaved door handles for awhile and like everyone says they are a bitch. I don't have door poppers yet, I roll down the window with my alarm set. When it doesn't work I have to crawl through my trunk. It's cool to have chicks go "omg wow you have no door handles, woooo let's have sex" (well maybe not exactly like that
), but trust me it's a bitch, I'd reccommend not doing it.

I shaved both handles myself in autobody class at school on my crx, and since then I realize what a bitch it is and how all poppers suck and can fail at any time.. I went to the trouble of goin ahead and gettin another driver door and repainting it and i trashed the whole door with the shaved handle. Now i just have the passenger side shaved until I get off my lazy ***, get another door, and paint it. Shaved handles suck for daily drivers!
I know what I'm doing. my dad paints at a body shop I'm wiring the electronics and my dads friends at the shop are doing the body work for free. then my dad will paint it I understand shaved handles suck for a daily driver. and on that note the rex won't be a daily driver for long.
some kid around here with a crx had shaved door handles w/o poppers... he had a rope attached to the handle that went from the front of the car to the hatch so he would open his trunk and pull the rope ..... im not sure exactly how it all worked but it did.... just looked a little 'un-cool' i suppose...

number 4 is soo true. I did this on my CRX and I'm sick of them. Luckily I'm replacing both doors so I won't be shaving the door handles.
