Steering Wheel Shaky
Sorry about this not being posted in the right place. The problem I have is when Im on the highway and hit the brakes (not hard) the steering wheel starts shaking and vibrating alot. I had all the back and front rotors replaced three months ago (aftermarket rotors). I really dont know what the problem is... I took it to Honda cuz i have a friend that checked it out there and the mechanic said the rotors need machining and it should get rid of the shaking and vibration. So should I go ahead and get the rotors machined? and will that fix the problem??
And one other problem is, as I go over 80km/h, the steering wheel starts vibrating a little but not bad... then when i go more than 130 it starts to go away. It just happens from like 80 and over and to around 120km/h.
I would really appreciate if someone can help me out or gimme advice on what to do. This is on a 92 Acura Vigor LS.
Thanks,

Are you on stock rims?? Even if make sure none are bent, if so that is a definate cause of wheel vibration at certain speeds. Also do you brake alot at higher speeds? Even if you just bought new rotors mass breaking at higher speeds cause warpage due to the heat. I have had both problems. Get your tires rotated/balanced/alignment. By then you should know if your rims are good other than that its your rotors. Other than that I don't know.
Thanks for the quick replies guys!
really appreciated it.
So basically your saying, get alignment and wheel balance done to see if the vibration goes away. I cant rotate because my back tires are really bad (almost bald). I'll do the alignment and wheel balance to see if the vibration goes away.
Now regarding the shaking when hitting the brakes, I dont slam hard at high speeds. I was told that aftermarket rotors just arent up to spec with genuine dealer rotors... then again dealer rotors are prolly really expensive... About the rims being bent, I have no idea. They are stock rims. I try to avoid hitting pot holes and what not a lot but there are tims where I've hit some.
Uhh im so stressted out... should I buy the real rotors from acura which will cost alot or get the aftermarket machined. Im worried about two things, if I get the real genuine rotors from acura and the problem still exists and if I machine the aftermarket rotors and the problem still exists... so much money down the drain.

1. check all your lug nuts make sure they are tightened to spec
2. check your tires make sure that the side walls arent torn or haved inflated
3. have your alignment checked this normally has to be done after hitting a deep pothole.
4. are all your tires the same size?

1. Checked
2. My back tires are in bad shape.. the outer side walls are cracked and stuff.
3. Will do.

the shaking when u brake is caused by un-even rotors. you need to get the rotors re-surfaced. i had the same problem on my last two cars. have a mechanic re-surface it and it should stop the shaking. shouldnt cost much too.

yes.
Could be tire/wheel balance (amplified when brakes are applied)
Warped rotors (amplified when brakes are applied)
Get new tires (you need them anyway) and a new balance
if still shaky, then new rotors.

get new tires might as well, if ur rotors are OEM replacement it should be able to turn ur rotors, it they cross drilled/slotted then u have to get it machined.

The rotors are aftermarket, not from dealer.
Im gonna do things one at a time. First I will get alignment and wheel balanced done. Then get two new back tires and throw the front ones to the back and put new ones in the front. after all that, if vibration is gone at high speeds, then i will fix the shaking problem by probably just getting the rotors from the dealer.
Because if I machine these aftermarket, they might warp quicker next time and not have enough meat on them left. and i'll leave the back ones aftermarket
