I think this happened Sunday autocrossing. I noticed it yesterday. Only the bar seems to be messed up, the subframe and the alignment are still where they've always been, so I guess the bar saved it, but damn. I thought the reinforcement bar would have been stronger than that. If it was all bling, the least they could have done was engrave or paint "SPOON" on the bar. At least then I would have felt like I got something out of it.
Oh well, I guess I gotta make my own now....

Which sway bar do you have with that tie bar?

Did you run off the coarse a few times? Or did that bar bend from just the turns? If so then I may sell mine now.

I'm thinking it got bent from compressing too hard. The only way that thing could give way would be to get compressed on its axis. I never went off into the grass.

How in the world could the sub-frame move that much...Its the support bar right, not the sway bar that we are looking at. Correct or not?

Yeah, the subframe is still fine, there's nothing wrong with the sway bar. I looked at it again, its a smooth bend, no kink... so I don't think it buckled. I took a turn out of the threaded end, I'm gonna see if it relieves the stress and straightens out.

looks like independent suspension works well. the sub-frame could have never done that. i'd say control arms. now you need a better sway bar- tie bar combo.

Well, they made it out of aluminum, thats problem #1. Everytime it flexes it gets weaker and tiny cracks begin to develop.
Problem #2 is that its hollow, so its got relatively thin walls and room to move.
So basically what I think happened is all the beating it's gotten, its just been cycled so many times, it basically just gave out. It probably could have done this without causing damage to the rest of the car because the subframe and the other parts down there all appear to be steel, which is far stronger to aluminum when it comes fatigue, and if its doing its job re-inforcing that subframe, then it appears to have done its job.
For now, I'm planning on just replacing the Spoon crossbar with a solid chrome-moly (4140 alloy) rod. Ultimately, I'll end up with something better, I just need a quick fix at the moment.

I think this is a 02 EX civic, do they have the same chassis as the DC5?

The only difference is you RSX guys have the integrated tie bar under the subframe from the factory, I don't. Do the hatchbacks have that too?

All the EP3's have them, but I mean the little tie bar in addition to the rear anti-roll bar.
