metal shavings in the oil pan
just a question, is it normal to have metal shavings in the oil pan after a bottom end build or is this a sign of something seriously wrong? i wouldnt say it was tons of metal, but deffinatley noticable
If the block was freshly machined maybe the shop didn't clean the parts well enouph - that's not good. You should be able to tell if they are shavings from surfacing and machining or chunks of bad parts. Good Luck
i dont have a digi cam to take pictures of the shavings, i put new acl bearings on a micropolished crank, could something be wrong there?

im def. not jaming on it, this was just after the first startup, car ran about five minutes. i was gonna change the oil and i noticed the oil pan was dented a little, i took it off to try to pound it out a little, thats when i saw the shavings
Post pics, oil should be pearly silver colored, if you see a lot of bronze or large metal chunks pull the caps off and check the bearings, could of spun one if clearances were too tight.

ive gotta get some pics, i dont have a digi. if that was the case can the bearings just be replaced, or does the crank need to be replaced also?

Bearings Dont break in?
There should be no metal transfer on bearings
And there shouldnt be any metal in the pan..
any metal transfer from new parts will be in the filter END of story....

could the builder have not properly cleaned out the block properly before reassembly?

I would have to agree with most of the reply - no motor should have material in it flying around or shavings in the oil or oil pan. From what I know there is no break in period on bearings. I would say tear it down and go threw it again. Just my 2 cents

im not disagreeing with anyone, i am a rookie. the machine shop is tearing apart the bottom end and going to tell me in a day or so. i just want to protect myself from getting taken for more money. i know you cant say for sure unless you see the motor, just trying to get an idea of what i may be looking at. thanks
If you had to compare the stuff you see in your motor -
1 - like very fine sand
2 - small clipping's off a finger nail
which would better explain it ??

I know that was a stupid question - but when the block was say surfaced and honed there COULD have been left over small small small sand like metal from the stones, that would mean the builder did a poor job at cleaning it up before assembly. But larger pieces like bits of finger nails to me would point the finger at a much larger problem, bearing etc. If the builder has a good company he will stand behind his work if not then ????????? good luck.

im sure that im going to hung out to dry on this one. i dont think i am getting any help from the builder here. lesson learned i guess. i just hope its not going to cost an arm and a leg to fix. my buildup budget is shot
