Default High compression pinging problem ??

I have an a6 with pm7 pistons and a y8 head gasket. This puts compression around 11.5 to 1.
Anyways, i am running the mugen chip and cannot get it to stop pinging past 5k rpms without retarding the timing as far as the dist. bracket will allow. This is with 93 octane. Is there something wrong or is the ignition timing on the chip very aggresive?
Thanks

And if you advance timing, what happens?

If the timing is set at stock, or advanced the pinging becomes more pronouced and occurs at a lesser rpm, say 4k.
