Default z6 or y8 head?

How can you tell the difference? And which one is better to use (if any difference). I got a d16z6 motor for tyra (my EF hatchy) and it has a bad head on it... I got a head from my friend that I am going to put on it... thing is I know the timing belt is different (from what I have heard) and want to know how I tell the difference between the heads. If it is the y8 head just use the z6 cam gear or what? Thanks in advance

go with the y8 head.. high compression.. if your looking at the chambers from z6 and y8 you'll see the chambers on y8 is smaller than z6... do some research about mini-me setup... timing belt also has to be the same as the head...!!

You need to search. Each head has its pros and cons.

It's a give/take thing.

Y8 head will yield more compression, but you will loose out on flow.
It also has better quench pads to deal with lessing chances of detonation.
The intake ports are designer with economy in mind.

Z6 head has less compression, but if you plan to add a turbo or anything then the Z6 head will be a better choice since it flows better.

Even after equally porting both the Z6 and Y8 heads the Z6 head still flows better.

PSI, yes I plan on some boost... but my original question wasnt answered... how can I tell the difference? I got this head sitting in my garage and dont know what it is... I need it for the z6 motor I got. I am going to put it on this weekend and I am not sure if its a y8 or a z6 head. I want to know so I know which timing belt to get. HOW DO I TELL IF ITS A Y8 OR A Z6? lol

But thanks for the info, I hope its a z6 head because I am going to go boost in the future

ahhh...

I just asked a similar question
https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=868812

I haven't seen the Y8 belt in person so I don't know what physical differences it has. The honda part numbers are different for them as well.

Do you have the heads off so you can set them side by side? You can just about instantly tell what head is what by looking at the combustion chamber. They are very different in appearance.

Damnit I wish the heads were both off and side by side... I live in Central Cali, my car is in So cal with a blown d16a6. The complete d16z6 with fucked valves is sitting with the car waiting for install this weekend. I got the head I have here at home with me locally and the guy just said "Its a single cam VTEC head" So I was like "Ok sounds good to me"

Its got the VTEC silenoid and all, I just need to figure out if its a y8 or z6, but ya thanks for all the help.

Even if its a y8 I can just use the cam gear from the z6 to run the z6 timing belt right? Thats my biggest concern, so I can make sure I get my car running this coming weekend.
