New Respect for the R (1st track event, BIR)
finely got the R to the track last week and it totally blew my mind. I've tracked my old Civ but there was no comparison what so ever!
me and a friend (bill, AKA nightminx) decided to attend BIR (brainerd international raceway) with the Minnesota corvette club. having never driven this track we were assigned with the rest of the "noobies" to the novice group where we were given a rundown and several training laps and then set on our way
when we arrived we were in awe of the cars there. we were BY FAR the most underpowered car there. (except for a stock passat) after several laps i think bill and i impressed everyone. we were both rolling most of the cars in our group that consisted of 5 or 6 vets, an extremely modded evo, an RX7 and several others i can't think of off the top of my head.
it was a BLAST and and i plan on getting back as soon as i get new tires
hotel the night before

waitin to begin

wow do i feel outmatched

some on track pics

THIS THING WAS SCARY!

viper

the reason i need new tires
(end of the day)

pic of the track (longest strait in the US! i believe)

comments and questions welcome
we also got some in/out of car video but i don't have it, I'll see if i can get bill (nightminx) to post it for all our enjoyment

I can just barely make out the belts showing through on the left edge. Nice.

I think the front straight and the back straight at Road America are both slightly longer. Here are aerial photos of both tracks, using the same scale on each, which makes it easy to compare:

Thanks for the photos. Sounds like a nice time.

My tires are worse than that, I'm in dire need for some new ones
Odd Question: Anyone know if RE-010's are still to this day manufactured, because I sent back two sets this winter from tirerack.com. They came to my house cracked, scraped and look like they had been sitting in the warehouse for 10 years!

If you knew the people who run and work at Tire Rack, and if you had seen their highly-automated warehouse, you would know that they thrive on frequent turnover of inventory. They arrange with the tire manufacturers to provide only the amount of tires they expect to sell, and they don't let them sit on the shelf for years. (Besides, the RE010 was designed for the ITR, which came out less than ten years ago!)
The tire manufacturers manufacture tires on an as-needed basis. When they have sufficient inventory, they don't make them; when the inventory drops below a certain point, they make more. This is true of specific sizes as well as models. So it's possible that Bridgestone hasn't made the 195/55-15 RE010 in a while, and it's equally possible that they made a batch last week, or next week.
You can tell the age of any particular tire by checking the codes on the sidewall. When were the tires you returned manufactured?

have you driven with AARRF before? i ask because they were the only MN based group i ever drove with while i was there........and well.......i was less than impressed. was curious as to what you thought of the corvette club in comparison.
i've driven BIR a few times, it's st00pid fast.
i would think something is wrong with your alignment as well.

yup i drove in a few aarrf events last year, along with VSCR racing club and now the corvette club. over all i think that corvette club was the best (for atleast semi experianced drivers)
they gave alot more freedom to drive, session langths were longer (1 hour) and they didn't mind passengers. everyone there was REALLY cool. i was expecting a bunch of snobby rich guys but they were all very nice and seemed intorested in the R.
AARRF is not ran the greatest but i think that as long as you run in the quicker groups you weed out alot of the bad drivers.
i still plan on attending AARRF this year
it's also the only club i know about that actualy provides Timing equipment.

You can use that site to get an aerial/satellite (I'm not sure which) photo of almost any place in the United States. Just go to either link and type in the name of the place in the upper left corner, where it says "Search Terraserver".
