Default CBR600 Hurricane - Trouble w/ 2nd Gear. (Need help)

I have an 88' CBR600 Hurricane.

As I'm riding I have trouble with 2nd gear. First off if the bike is cold it won't always shift into second from first, sometimes it'll just dump me into N. This isn't a big issue as it doesn't happen often, I almost always warm my bike up.

The big issue: If I'm accelerating quickly and shift into second, at about 7500 rpms the bike will start to jump/skip like every 1000 rpms. It's like 2nd gear is slipping, but not a normal clitch disk slip, more like it's missing a tooth on the gear or something. This only happens above 7500 and will also happen at like 3000 if i hit the gas hard. It happens once at 3k, and from 7.5k up it'll continue to happen all the way up to about 10k. This only happens in second.

My mechanic said it'd be about $500 to pull the engine and look at the tranny, and from there it would just go up. When I ride it now I go from first to 2nd, then by 7k in second i shift to 3rd. If i'm accelerating quickly i'll just skip 2nd all together.

Anyone have any idea what this could be, how bad it could be, how easy it can be fixed (I do a lot of DIY stuff), and any other thoughts that may help??

I dont know exactly whats wrong with your bike, but ive known 2 different people with older suzukis with similar problems. They just rev it up a bit more in first and skip 2nd all together, or rev it a bit in 2nd then **** to 3rd. I dont think fixing the problem would be worthwhile unless you could do it yourself.

Good luck.

I don't know exactly but I'd guess around 1000 bucks. The quote of $500 was for my mechanic to take it apart, find what's wrong with it, and them reassemble it. It was $400 for labor and $100 for parts. I imagine that it'd take a couple more hours of labor to rebuild it, and some $ for the needed parts. Maybe about $1200 total...

Anyone ever have a tranny rebuilt, what did it cost?

Don't bother fixing it, just check Ebay and get an engine/tranny from a wrecked one. I see ones for my FZR all the time, usually around 350 bucks.
