Default 2nd gear problems

When getting on the bike and shifting into 2nd it catches for a moment and then slips back into neutral. It doesnt happen all the time but I'd guess 1/3 of the time.
Any idea as to what the prob could be.
BTW its a 95 ninja zx7r has 15,8xx mi. and is jetted with full exhaust. Any help would be appreciated. TIA!

I think Im regreting it now but once I jump on and 2nd gear works its one of the best bikes to drive...its just annoying when you downshift to quick pass someone and it catches then lets loose and goes vrrrrrrooooooooommmmmm.

Thank your previous owner for clutchless shifting. Now you need a new tranny.

In the meantime, don't baby the shift. Make sure it's nice and positive and that should reduce the tendency to miss. Start saving your money and shopping around.

I thought you were gonna say you had an r6 at first. THey have a lot of problems like that. But considering your bike and mileage, I'd first change the oil then you might be able to change 2nd gear w/o getting a whole new tranny.
Check out ronayers.com for cheap prices on oem stuff.

Just to make sure sometimes I will keep the presure on the gear up and give it some gas before I relax my foot...then it will usually stay in.
How much is it to rebuild a tranny on a bike??

It has NOTHING to do with clutchless shifting. It DOES have to do with the timing of your shifts in relation to when you're cutting and getting back on the throttle.

Hopefully it's just a shift fork. Chances are, it's the fork, and the two gears that mate together (possible rounded off the dogs).

It doesn't require an entire transmission rebuild. I'm not 100% on the ZX7 but you will more than likely have to split the case to replace the bad parts.

My freind has a 96 ninja and it has the same problems. But much worse!!!! When you jump on it in second the bike bucks violently. I have heard of other ninjas with 2nd gear blown out. In not sure about how much to get someone to put the gear in for you but I did see all the transmission **** on ebay for 165$ (all the gears, shift fork, etc.) for my freinds 600.
