Swap GSR 5th gear into an LS tranny ???????
I want to swap out the long 5th gear in my LS tranny with a shorter GSR 5th gear.
Is this a straight swap and if so what other parts will I need to do this.
Regards,
Mike

Yes, it's a straight swap. Just put the GSR 5th set on your LS countershaft. That's it. But again, why are you doing this? Sure it might be a slightly faster ratio, but you're in 5th. Would make practically no difference.
Plus, your final drives are way different. 4.266 versus 4.400. And the 5th gear ratio is close already. You'd probably not notice a difference at all unless you changed your final drive.

Yep..
You're not making a lot of sense.. Most people swap the LS 5th gear into their GSR or B16 tranny for better gas milage.. You're trying to do the opposite? You are not going to improve anything.. You will get less top speed and you might be at higher RPMs on the highway.. but like shamoo said without changing the final drive you might not even notice anything..
Maybe you want to put in all the other GSR gears and keep your LS 5th.. that i would understand..

It's a track car. I already have a 4.7 FD and I want to have a shorter 5th gear.
Fuel mileage is not a consideration.
What other parts do I need besides the actual gear?

why are you ignoring the replies to your thread? there is NO benefit to having a shorter 5th, why would you do it?

Again this is not a street car....it's a track car.
With my LS engine the long 5th gear causes the motor to bog down in 5th gear. I shift into 5th gear at about 105 mph at 6800 rpm's and the motor bogs down to 5000 rpm and won't pull past 110.
With the long LS 5th gear it's geared in 5th with a 4.7 for 137 mph which I don't hit at any tracks here (nor could it pull to that speed).
Why do you think a shorter 5th gear won't make a difference. The car should pull harder in 5th.
Have you ever driven a GSR in 5th gear at say about 110 + vs. an LS. A GSR will continue to pull in 5th gear but an LS won't. It just sits at 5000 rpm's and bogs down.
I've driven both cars at the track in 5th at over 100, the GSR's shorter 5th gear makes a huge difference.

What kind of track? Im assuming drag since you're talkin about speeds over 100...
Even then when do you shift into 5th gear with an LS tranny?
4th gear ends at a bit over 100mph.. and if you have the power to get into 5th on a 1/4 mile then you shouldnt be bogging down now matter what 5th gear you have..
Im going to repeat what shamoo said again.. The final drive will make the difference not the 5th gear itself.. Changing just the 5th wont give you any noticable gains...

No it's not a drag car but a road course track car. It has a stock LS engine making about 130 whp.
I know the drag guys w/ turbos liken the LS 5th gear. This is not a drag car nor a car with aftermarket power.
It's a stock LS engine with a 4.7.
The 4.7 does help make the car pull better in 5th with the stock LS 5th gear, but my thinking was that it would make some difference to put a GSR 5th gear in.
With a stock FD (4.2) I was shifting from 4th to 5th at about 112 mph at 6800 rpm's. With the 4.7 I am doing about 105 mph when I shift into 5th. The car does pull a bit better with the 4.7 in 5th gear but I still think a shorter 5th gear would make a difference.
Am I wrong?

Maybe you should try using a GSR tranny. It has closer ratios and will keep you in your powerband better even if you dont have a vtec engine...
I dont really understand what kind of track you are on, going over 100mph..

I track both my cars at Watkins Glen International Raceway and Pocono Raceway (sports car road course).
In my BMW M Coupe I hit about 135 on the back straight in the LS about 110-112. In my buddies GSR (granted it has more hp) I can hit about 120 on the same straight.
Just to reiterate I already have upgraded the 4.2 to a 4.7 My gearbox will need a rebuild and I thought a shorter 5th gear would help things out a bit.
Not sure if a GSR tranny will bolt right up to me LS motor and I already have 80% of the parts for the rebuild.
I understand that a 4.7 would make a bigger difference than simply swapping 5th gear. My question is if swapping both (already have the 4.7) would make a differnece vs. just the FD swap?

It definately will unless you have an older integra with a cable tranny.. If have a 94+ Integra you can bolt up a GSR transmission with no problems..
Sorry I cant help you with your other questions..

I don't get it? Don't you people read what the guy is asking? Maybe it's not common place, but he will see a gain in acceleration in 5th gear.
I'd do it buddy. If you've all ready installed a 4.7 FD, the GSR 5th gear set will show improvement over the LS set (duh?).
Not sure how much of an improvement, as I don't have time to do the math (figuring 130 whp, and I'd need to know your over all tire diameter).
There WILL be an improvement in acceleration, but you may have a gear limited top speed (I did when I had an ITR tranny on my LS. I hit red-line at about 113 in 5th). Actually, with a 4.7 FD and GSR 5th gear set, you may loose top end (IE, you'll hit red-line before you pass your current top speed); but you'll definitely get there faster.

Was that with a stock final drive? 4.7 final drive is going to knock that down considerably.

You guys are saying hitting redlline at 113 and 126mph. Do you mean hitting the governor? At 6800rpms a gsr tranny will be going 138mph. Thats with the OE tire size of course.

You put the GSR what in your LS?
Final drive? A certain gear? I highly doubt putting a GSR 5th in an LS tranny will make your top speed 126mph. Your final drive in your LS is LOWER than a GSR. So how would putting a GSR 5th make your top speed LOWER than a stock GSR's top speed? Doesn't make sense.
Unless you dramatically altered your final drive to something HIGHER than a stock GSR (4.400).

They are probably talking about their rev limiter. There are no governers on USDM Integras (3rd gen).

The GS-R redlines at 8000 while ls 7000 sooo I can't push RPMs as high with the b1 motor. Limit the speed you can get. However the closer gear ratio caused acceleration to be faster.
Yes that was a completely stock transmission including stock final drive

Well I did it tonight. Had the LS 5th gear on order, took a while to get here from Honda. It took about 5 hours to swap the LS 5th into the GSR tranny. Pulling the tranny was more of a pain in the *** than changing the gears. Only needed a press for the 4th/5th on the countershaft, everything else came off nicely.
So are you interested in the GSR 5th set? It's ready to ship and in perfect condition.
