Turbo for 99 Prelude
I have a '99 Prelude that is stock except for cold-air intake and exhaust. I now want to put a turbo in, but know nothing about turbos...what's the best kind of turbo to put into my car? Would it be better to buy a turbo kit with headers/manifold/etc. included or to buy parts seperately? Would love to hear some opinions and maybe see some pics of Turbo-modified Preludes.
check out the essential prelude links especially this one

If you don't have a lot of knowlege of turbos, you can always go with a pre-made kit. Such as Greddy, Drag, F-Max, Rev-Hard, ect. I have the Greddy kit on my lude and it is great, Greddy is prob the best for daily driving. Here are some pics of mine:

actually greddy is the worst kit for the lude. Too small of a turbo, the piping is too small, and thier FMICs suck ***** for thier price.
your numbers are soo low for 7psi.
for the thread starter, if u dont know know what is involved with a turbo, RESEARCH FIRST, before u buy ANYTHING...researching is your best friend.

The blue box is the worst thing about greddy, The piping is one of the more professional with perfect fitment, cant say that about some of the above named kits. If you only want 6-8 psi get a hondata or aem ems, upgrade to greddy type 24v intercooler and some bolt-ons and you have a reliable 250 whp. And most good intercoolers go for around a g.

If you don't know much about turbos, you could also look into a supercharger. Jackson racing has a setup for 5th gen ludes, and endyne also has custom kits(they claim some thing like 25psi capable on the supercharger). I know someone with the Jackson setup, he has some other bolt-ons and makes 250-260 at the wheels I think.
25 psi on stock internals. Most factory turbo cars, i.e. MR2 T, 944 T, ect don't come from the factory with that much boost. And pushing boost to 25 psi on those cars with stock internals is pushing it.
Hondas aren't built for turbos. Consider the fact that most honda turbos with stock internals can only handle 6-7 psi. MR2 T and 944 T come from the factory with at least 10 psi boost.

Whoa slow down. First of all, i said the Greddy is the best kit for daily driving, which is the reason for the smaller turbo.
Also, the Greddy kit doesn't come with an intercooler, which is why I have custom piping and a custom FMIC. So you can always get the Greddy kit, and choose your own intercooler and piping. I've seen ludes with a Greddy kit pushing 250-260 with engine managment, which is not bad for 7 psi and still great for daily driving.

dont do anything to your car when you dont understand what you're doing to it, when messing with a turbo and not knowing anything about them, you will blow up your engine...ask around...
there are many links through this site to research turbo as well as the rest of the net... a personal favorite turbo source of mine is 'maximum boost' by Corky Bell
, my barnes and noble had it in stock.
research.

i know the greddy kit doesnt come with the IC, but their ICs are the worst on the market....I am glad u got a custom IC, since that is probably better than the Greddy. THe blue box sucks with hondas...it is **** on my buddy's RSX and it is **** on my other buddy's civic si, so he went AEM EMS.
My car will be a daily driver, and i am going custom kit...SC61 turbo, custom 2.75inch piping, 3" downpipe with 3" exhaust. i am going Uberdata, with Spearco FMIC. With 10psi i will push 230 to the wheels. And that is fine, since i wont be at 10psi 95% of the time. Custom is sooo much better than ready to go kits.

yea, i've heard nothing but bad things from my buddies with civics about their Greddy kits (although its only two of them with the kit, neither like it).
10psi on a daily driver, thats not bad, you're going to be at 10psi 5% of the time that your driving? sounds like fun
did you build up your internals or running stock? sorry to jack the thread..

Like everyone else said, research. In my opnion from what ive seen, peicing together your own turbo setup is way better than buying any kit. Kits usally cost like 3K+. If you peice together your own looking for good deals, you could prob come up witha nice setup for 2K. thats with GOOD DEALS, and used parts. Read before you do anything. Good luck
Sweet prelude. I hope to get a prelude soon, I plan on putting a GReddy turbo on it as well. Main reason being is that Im in Cali, and the GReddy kit is the only CARB legal turbo kit on the market. Of course I will upgrade it with a good intercooler, AEM EMS, etc. I doubt the SMOG people will know the difference as long as I have the CARB number on the turbo everything should be good.

they are worse compared to the spearco, since they dont use the better cooling for bar and plate. That is y.
and as for daily driving at 10psi, if u are cruising, u are never going to be cruising at full throttle which is set at 10psi. u are usually sitting at 20%, so that may be 3psi. At first i will have the bottom end done, then later work on the head, since that is easier.

You are right. Sorry, Ive been talking to a lot of people about the GSR, and Si kits recently, and got confused. I did just get off the phone with GReddy though. They had to change a part on the kit, so they cancled their application, and sent off a new one with a bunch of other applications in early Feb. The guy said that they should have something by the end of summer. Or, you could just have that guy that is on this forum make you a fake one. They actually look really good.

i am just guessemating on the whp, i just am going to run close to 10psi at full boost, since the motor wont be fully built...then i am just going to tune it after everything is done to the highest boost possible. each i up the psi for daily driving it will be tunned.

I realize that the greddy's IC's are Tube and Fin design, from what I can remember that bar and plate vs tube and fin isnt much of a difference between them one flows better while the other cools better.
I can't remember which does which.
But I wouldn't pass off that the greddy unit is absolute crap, they are really of high quality and build pretty well.

greddy's ok, but researching and building it custom is the best deal you can get. you get better engine management, actually get SS lines for oil feed and return, better piping, etc.
