I'm looking at a new car, how to validate authenticity of a swap?

I am looking at a new car, and the owner claims that a new engine was installed recently. What doesn't make sense is that the car has relatively low mileage, but it could be possible. My question is: How can I make sure that the new engine in the car is NOT the original?
probably a dumb question but if the owner already told you its a swap, why are you checking to verify that? Maybe burned out the other engine? or maybe it was stolen out of the car?
you can always try to match up the vin on the engine with that on the firewall in the engine bay.

if it doesn't have many km's
why was the engine swapped?
I wouldn;t buy a car where someone had changed the engine cuz it was shot...... who knows why it was changed.... who knows what else is wrong with the car, tranny, etc.
