Let's play "Where is this sound coming from?"
My car has been making a noise for a while now and I originaly thought it was exhaust related, but now I don't think so. I did some more listening today and found the following:
It is a very faint chatter, that is most prominent while cruising, and changes character as you go from a slight load on the engine, to a completely neutral state, and then to slight engine braking. It has a randomness that sounds like something loose and is rattling somewhere.
It is noticeable in all gears, and at any rpm, but is most prominent around 3-4K, and goes away when the clutch is pressed in, and comes back when the clutch is released. I can cruise at a low speed, without a load on the engine and press and release the clutch, maintaining a constant rpm, and the sound comes and goes. It doesn't do it if I sit parked in neutral and let the engine rev, regardless of whether the clutch is in or not.
So, based on all of this, where do you think it is originating from? The engine? The clutch? The transmission/gearbox? I don't know enough about transmissions to really know what is going on in there.
I've taken it to the dealer and they heard it and said, "Yeah, Type-R's are very noisy," but this sound hasn't been there from the start. The car has 37K on it and I have missed 3 or 4 shifts in its lifetime. Any help would be appreciated before I take it back to the shop again.

The sound is definately not from inside the car, and I removed the header heatshield a long time ago, but not the cat shield. I'm leaning more towards something in the drivetrain since it comes and goes depending on if the clutch is engaged.
My guess is a loose heat shield near the catilitic converter. A faulty/damaged B-pipe could also be the problem. The B-pipe is the part of the exhaust between the header and catilitic converter. Have your local Acura dealership check out those areas.

i had my heatshield hitting my cat a while ago. it was about athe that rpm and mostly when i hit a bump. i took it to a muffler shop and he just bent the heat shield up with a crow bar. problem fixed
i got the same problem!! it occurs pretty often, but not all the time.
it happens between 3100rpm and 4000 rpm (i've been studying it)
it sounds like its comming from the dash somewhere.....anyone?

Well, ya got me, but I might be able to help you with one problem. I don't know what dealership you're taking it too, but DO NOT even mess with Pohanka, they give me so much run around crap/BS answers everytime I go there. If you wanna talk to a dealership, check out Radley, but not during the evening hours, the service manager then is a b*tch, a big one.

Thanks for all the suggestions, but I don't think it is any of the heatshields or any part of the exhaust. It is too dependant of the clutch. I'll let you know what I find out.
My car makes the same noise, from like 3500 on up, but only when there is a load on the engine. I'm getting it dyno'd on Saturday so I'll find out where the damn noise is coming from. I thought it was my valves, but I did a valve adjustment and the noise is still there. Plus it does not sound like the noise changes pitch with the engine. Oh well, I'll let you all know after saturday.... I hope

Why was I not informed!!???
I'm concerned cause I'm getting the exact same type of noise. And I'm going racing in 9 days, not much time to fix . . .
heat shields?
Random Technology REALLY SUCKS when it comes to their shield spot-welded on their cat - don't buy theirs, you'll just end up removing it!!!
I had a noise that I could have swore was coming from the dashboard. Same description - at about 3000rpms, it would rattle. My car had recently been hit while parked, and I was sure that it unsettled the mounting of the dash....
Then I put my ear up to the driver's side visor/headliner (Careful if you do this while driving). That's where the noise was actually coming from. It only took me a month to figure it out.
A bit of foam tape up there did the trick.
batmobile - who hopes you are as lucky
P.S. There is a some kind of TSB on the passenger side visor rattling on Integras. Don't know too much else about it, though.
