why you can't change 5th gears in your tranny
i thought i'd try to switch out an h22 5th gear for an h23 5th gear, thinking that it would help daily driving a little. some people say you can. . .some people say you can't. i figure i would find out for sure. well, i found out.

as you can see the difference there might as well be 30 miles.
there's a small possibility i can still make it work. .. . . i'll let you guys know if i can.

wouldn't it be great if someone machined a replacement that would REALLY alter the gear ratio?
I hate cruising around at 4000rpm in 5th gear at only 70mph, it sucks!

Hells Yah. Do you guys know if the Euro-R H23 VTEC is 6 spd? I want to swap one of those into my Lude. Sorry if this is a dumb question, I've looked around a lot and am not quite sure about this motor.

no, there is no 6-speed h22 or h23 or anything h.
just for ***** and giggles i've attempted to assemble the gears with the h23 5th gear, and when it's put on upside-down, it mates evenly with it's mainshaft counterpart.

unfortunately, the nut then doesnt sit properly. .. . so it still isnt gonna work . . . probably. it should be below the shaft. . .

A machine shop would probably do it for less than $40.</TD></TR></TABLE>
i'm surprised there isn't anyone out there doing this in large quantities... one of the biggest complaints of prelude owners is that 5th gear is too short, so machining a part that probably wouldn't be all that expensive (it's just taking apart the tranny that's a pain), makes sense to me.
can't be that hard to make a single gear...

Isn't the H23 5th the same as the 97-01 5th? 1.034, I think. So if you want the slightly longer 5th gear in a 93-96 tranny (1.034 vs. 1.071), your best bet would be to get it from a newer H22. It's only about $70 from http://www.hondaautomotiveparts.com.
Just bear in mind, the 1.034 5th gear still spins 4,000 rpms @ 80 mph. So you'll have to try and use an Accord 5th gear (0.903) to make more of a difference than that.

from the looks of it, if you really wanted to do it, you take it to a machine shop and say see the thickness of this (show h22 gear) i want the h23 gear (show h23 gear) to be as thick as the h22, they will take a quick mesurment, throw it in a jig put it on the lathe and boom all done , precision machining.

guys, really...
WTF does it matter if your spinning 4k rpm, or 3700? The amount of fuel? Yea right, there is actually less load on the motor at 4k because its not working as hard to power the car.. My RPMs yes, but thats it.. Let the cars do what there were designed to do, and have the most kickass tranny ratios of ANY factory honda car..

dude cruising on the freeway is just annoying. I only have I and piping, stock muffler (thank god) and it's still louder than i want for freeway driving.
Plus if you are trying to cruise @ like 90 you're almost in damn vtec on the freeway!

crusing at 80 @ 4grand doesnt bother me. if u go a little bit slower you can hit a spot on the throttle that its quiet at. dont cruse at 90 then. bad gas mileage, and what for? ticket time ? if you need to pass someone the rpms are already there, drop 4th and away you go. B series drop to at least 3rd to get anywhere. i love my H series ^_^

well it may not bother you but it bothers a lot of people
passing power is nice, but i dont spend most of my time passing people. i'd do it for the quiet alone, forget fuel consumption and engine wear.
don't most JDM trannies have longer 5th gears? i know that was the case for 3rd gens and before anyways..
