Default How to safely change over to synthetic.

[searched with little help due to the controversial topic]

I decided to ask this forum due to the fact you were all involved in this transisition not too long ago on the K series.

It's been about a thousand miles since my rebuild.
I have been using cheap oil and now I am thinking of synthetic.

How should I safely change over to mobil 1 super synthetic?
I am looking to change the oil every 3 thousand miles.
Thanks!

I don't know what's the general rule of thumb, but on a new engine synthetic is a nono for breaking in and early ownership of it. You probably don't want to use synthetic yet.

I don't really understand what your saying?

Um... drain oil, remove oil filter, replace oil filter, fill up with oil, done.

I think he means like using a third synth, then two thirds synth, then finally all synth. But thats silly.

i work at my dad's lube shop, and to change to synthetic ANYTHING should be safe. A lot of people say (including Honda) say that switching Brake Fluid from a dot3 to a dot5 is a simple transition, but you should bleed the system first.

But your only dealing with oil, so just make sure everything is drained and you could even flush out some with using an extra quart. It'll cost about 6 bucks more, but it'll be worth it.

I had the dealer did the first oil change at 3k miles, and then I felt the car doesn't pick up as good as before or maybe it's just me. I'm waiting to switch to synethic oil at the next oil change.

After the 600 mile break in period, switch to synthetic whenever you wish. I've been running on synthetic ever since my first oil change.

Per Honda R&D **DO NOT** change the oil before your first scheduled oil chage. The oil in those engine have some additives to help break the engine in better, and give you longer life overall. Changing the oil before then will degrade your engine life. Then switch to Synthetic. I use Mobil1 5w-30 because every oil change shop has it. If you are a "do it yourself-er" (why anyone changes their own oil is beyond me. pay someone the $30 to get it done...sheesh) Neo, or Motul synthetics are excelent.

i spoke to one of the mech's at my dealership and they told me the dealer oil was semi synthetic. So he said that the really is no need to go full synthetic because the dealer oil is just fine. Now i thought this was a crock of crapola. But from looking at his totally modded evo8 that he did the work on himself, i kinda took his word for it.

can anyone back this up?

Where the hell can you get an oil change using Mobil 1 Tri-Syn for $30? The oil and filter alone costs more than that.

Why would you pay $5 a quart for dealer oil when you can get a full synthetic for the same price?

and i don't think all dealers use the same oil. I know here in Orlando: one uses pennzoil, another uses castrol, and the other uses mobil

Please show me the Honda part numbers to this special oil and/or additives.

I ask this question every time someone talks about 'special' oil and no one has been able to come up with anything more than "they heard this through a shop that has a friend of a friend that works at Honda."

It's in the manual for all 2002 RSX. I'm sure it goes for the same for new SI, TSX, etc.,

A lot of things are in the manual and they are all geared for the 'average' driver. What I was asking is a part number or some kind of bulletin that talks about this special break in oil. They just recommened that you leave the oem oil in for so many miles.
