How many times can you patch the same tire???
I just had the 4th (!) nail/screw removed from one of my rear tires
At some point does it become unsafe to patch? Should I just junk them?

Thats some bad luck there. I don't there is a number you should absolutely junk the tires but remember that the more patches = the more risk your taking.
More than one or two patches and I believe the tire is definately losing some kind of integrity. I used to bust tires back in the day and if you came in with 3 patches already I'd have to probably decline the the business and suggest you get a new tire most likely.

I personally have PLUGED my front tires about 4 times each and my rear 2 or 3 times each. NO problems yet.
I had 1 tire plugged 215/40/17 on the rear and have had it over 120mph a few times. I may be lucky. Dunlop sport w-10
