Default i need help with a ground control setup i just got..

ok i bought some ground control "sleeves" for koni sport shocks off ebay. these sleeves are for 88-00 civic integra i was told. these are the ones that fit real tight on the strut and are made specifically for koni yellows.. i have never owned a set of ground controls so i don't have any experience with them, but the sleeves are fitting very loose one my struts. maybe i am missing a part? ANY HELP would be GREAT. here are some pics..

its alittle hard to see but i tried to get pics of the gap between the body of the strut and the inside of the sleeve.

Those look like the standard sleeves to me. You will have to let those sleeves sit on top of the perches that came with the shock.

Those don't look like the GC Koni sleeves that I have. Mine are very tight on the body of the shock. In addition, one end of the sleeve has a larger I.D. than the other. This allows it to just fit over the circlip that comes with the Koni's. The end result is that it 'captures' the circlip between the shock body & the sleeve.

those look super long, like how the koni spec sleeves are supposed to be.

what car do you have? aren't ef shocks skinnier than eg shocks?

It looks like you have the correct sleeves for Koni, but you are missing the black aluminum rings that also go with them:

The sleeves should have a groove machined into the bottom that allows them to slip over those black rings, which in turn sit on the original Koni circlips. Make sense?

when i installed a set of GC on konis, there was the same amount of gap. if you have the black retainer ring shaun mentioned, as it looks like you do actually, then youre fine. the gap between the shock and sleeve on other shocks like tokico is even bigger and uses a rubber sleeve and orings to fill in the gap, but it seems unecessary with konis to fill in the gap as the kit doesnt come with anything to fill the gap. my friend i installed it for has mentioned no problems.

i am trying to put these on 88 crx si rear koni yellows... i was told that these fit very tight on the strut.. on one end of the red sleeves the sleeve is bored out more giving it a bigger diameter. it looks like this is done so that the sleeve can go over the "lip" right above the perch but its not a tight fit at all and the part that is bored out isn't bored deep enough so that the sleeve sits flush on the perch... instead is gets caught b4 it.. heres some pics to help explain what i mean...

heres the lip above the perch i was talking about

heres the sleeve down on the perch as much as it will go.. not resting on the perch

I remember the same thing being the case on my Civic. I wouldn't worry about it...it'll sit tight once the weight of the car is on it.

It looks like you have a newer Koni shock. My Konis were for an 88 CRX as well, but they only had a little circlip near the bottom, and thats what the black ring rested on.

Here's what mine looked like:

I think you have GC sleeves for Konis, but it looks like your Konis are of a newer design. You might have to call up GC and verify this.

A cheap solution would be to run some masking tape around the top of the shock to fill up the gap.

elmalouno's konis do indeed look different, perhaps that's the new style. it doesn't look like you'd need koni-specific sleeves for those. as for the gap, there should be rubber o-rings that slide over the shock to equally fill the gap.

elmalouno -

Send a PM to crxlee on this forum. He works for Koni and can help figure out what you have and he probably know how to make your GC fit.

I have those now... BIG improvement in fit and overall quality compared to the old sleeves; especially here in the northeast, where water/salt/yuck used to accumulate in the old sleeves causing the shock body to start rotting. Not so with the new design.

the OD of the koni's for the 88-91 crx si are smaller then the 92+ koni's. those "tiny" sleeves are designed for the bigger OD koni's wich come on the 92+.

Elmanoulo: Mine looked just like yours too, altough my Konis have the tiny perch because they 're for '94+ Integra. The were very loose and had a huge gap between the shock body and sleeve, plus it moved around. I called GC, and they said they sent me the right sleeves for the Konis. I was hesitant but I put them on the car after I told them I 'd sue them if anything happened to my car or me..
Everything was fine.

Once you put the springs on and the weight of the car sits on this setup, those threaded sleeves do NOT move! It is a CHEAP setup though, and water and other crap used to get trapped inside between the shock and the sleeve. Bad design if you ask me. I 'm curious though about what's different and better with the new GC threaded sleeves.

Also has anyone had a problem withe front Konis, where the knuckles slides down past the shock's perch?? How do you fix that? I 've heard of others having the same problem. My Konis are sitting in the garage because of that problem. I guess the perch on the front Konis gets worn out over time (only took 1.5yrs for me) and the knuckles just slides through it and your car ends up being crooked and unbalanced. You can't see it unless you take the wheel off. All you feel is that the handling changed a little and feels different. Koni should make an aluminum ring or something that supplements that little dinky perch on their front Honda shocks.
