At what engine temperature should OIL LEVEL be checked at......?
Yesterday, I changed my oil and I used 4.4 quarts total. I let the oil-burning Mobil 1 drain out for a good half hour before I added my new Amsoil....which btw is awesome stuff. The engine was noticably smoother at idle. (More of a review after first oil change.)
I later checked the dipstick five minutes after parking the car from a long drive and it was about 1 mm above the MAX line. That's usually where I like it in case of any oil usage.
This morning I did a quick check again with the engine bone cold and it measured about 4-5 mm above the MAX line.
I know the oil settled over night causing it to give a higher reading.
So, which reading should I go by?
Did I put too much oil? (i usually put 4.4 Q and it works out fine.)
Could any possible damage occur? If so, what?
TIA!

Go by the cold reading as in right before you start it the first time in the morning on a level surface.
At the high mark or just a hair under is fine.
I think the idle is in your head.
