Default Blown head gasket = richer mixture??

My SOHC is stock except for a DC 4-1 header and it has 84000 miles on it... After the overheat at ITR EXPO I have to add water to the radiator frequently since the coolant kept disappearing.. There are bubbles coming out of the radiator so I poke a smog machine sniffer in it and it reads HC at 500ppm.. Which backs my theory of having a bad head gasket...

I also hooked up a snap-on scanner on it and it reads the long term fuel trim is at -7 and the short term fuel trim is always at a negative value.... I reset the PCM, and the LT fuel trim is back to 0 and it idles very rough and stalls... After a few minutes the LT fuel trim has adjusted back to -5 to -7 then it idles fine...

My question is... Is the blown head gasket causing the engine to run rich, if so why? Fuel pressure is OK, no vacuum leaks and plugs and wires are fine... Thanks for the help!

If any water is getting into the exhaust stream, it could possibly contaminate the reading...
