Default vx build your opinion!

hey being a that gas prices are outrageous and my gti is pissing me off i turn to the hondas. well my true question is what modifications do you think i could do to a VX to get some decent power and keep my gas milage? also this will be a canyon car and im planning on getting coilovers, camber kit, strutbars, tie bar, sway bar and good rubber. but back to my main question what kind of mods can i do to the vx motor? im thinking Intake, header, exhaust ,fuel pump and im open to anyother suggestions power/ mpg wanted thanks for your help and if you know what your talking about please help. my first post in the Honda world

First, a fuel pump would be a waste.

In order of importance:

-suspension (this is a canyon car)

-EX/Si transmission (hybrid with the VX 5th gear)

-Noise makers (Intake, Exhaust, etc)

yeah thats a big NO on the fuel pump....
well you could if you want but it wouldnt do you much good.. If you wanna play with fuel on a VX motor i guess try a fuel pressure regulator but even then.... i dunno.

ANYWAYS
YEs start with intake and exhaust. The intake on those cars is very restricting!
For exhaust, dont go more than 2.25in because really an engine cant exhaust what it doesnt take in.. since it has restricted cylinder head flow it wont benefit from a nice *** exhaust system as much as an engine with good breathing capacity...
You also dont want to lose low end torque which is common.
I also recommend a 4-2-1 header...

i gotta goto class but i hope i helped somewhat :[
**** luck! :D

suspension first.

fuel pump= waste of your 100 bucks.

the motor isnt a very potent powerplant..try to get bolt ons, it wont give you much power total, but you will have some kickass mpg

Waste of time doing bolt ons.

Order a D16Z6 or JDM D15B w/ transmission...much more cost effective.

This past weekend, I bought back my VX I sold 10 months ago...

Keep the car stock or swap it... Wasting your money on bolt ons would be a..... waste....

Remember that gas mileage and power are reciprocals of each other...it takes more gas to make more power.

haha thats so true .. i just got my completly stock VX about 2 weeks ago .. i took the bottom air box off and put some coilovers on .. cars still slow but handles great so it feels faster .. other then that the 12 or 8 valve head doesnt really respond to HP so i wouldnt wast your money on mods .. swap or Dseries turbo best bang for your buck

on the contrary, everything else in traffic holds me up. i drive a vx, and it will be swapped someday. but for now, im enjoying only filling the tank like every week and a half.

to the thread starter. i have been in a couple of these "vx performance" threads before. the general feeling is its not worth it.

I just swapped out a a VX longblock I was running while I was "building" my Z6

ran it with Z6 intake manifold, p28 ecu, and header/exhaust. Got 38 mpg freeway, passed emissions with flying colors, and suprisingly enough, in vtec, the car pulled suprisingly well!

so the general census is that its a waste to get any performance out of this motor? it doens't seem like its that slow 90hp vtec in a 2100lbs car? also i like the whole mpg thing but im not willing to put a turbo on this motor.. if i turbo anything ill go back to my nissan past . as far as this motor goes NO on mods? what are some other motors that could get me performance with mpg?

well the tranny is geared so long for gas mileage, if you swap it to a d16z6 or d16y8 the gears will be closer and be a little quicker. The d16y8 would be a good choice due to the fact they have steel shift forks over the weaker z6 ones. Also as for engine choices I'd go with a d16y5 out of 96-00 hx it has vtec-e, I get 35-40mpg with mine and thats in a coupe, put that motor in your hatch and I'm sure you could do better. The y5 has a lot more potential than the vx engine. Also the y5 has roller rocker arms good for higher rev's

well you could keep your vx tranny and axles if you wanted to keep your transmission, a y5 tranny is geared a lot like yours and I don't have any trouble keeping up with traffic, it has 115 hp at the flywheel, I dunno what it is at the wheel not really any point to pay to put mine on it. For the vtec-e to work you would need to convert to obd2, I think all you need for that is a hx ecu and wiring harness. The engine of course, motor mounts should work because it's a d, don't hold me to that, and a y5/y8 tranny cause they are stronger.
Here I found this d16y5, it's an auto though IMO this swap is really cheap that is if you get it and noone else bids on it. You could also sell the parts you don't need, escpecially that cvt tranny, those are exp. as f***
