What extractors and exhaust???
G'day
(Im from Aus as U can tell)
I have a 1994 Prelude Vti-R with 94000kms and I want to boost the power a bit, and make it sound better. I am after a set of extractors (not headers) and a new exhaust, but I have no clue as to what brand/size/4-2-1 or 4-1, etc.
What is the best dia for exhaust for the H22A1(Im pretty sure thats what Iv got...)? I was thinking 2.5" to 2.75", but thats just a guess. Im not going to do any forced induction (insurance$$$), but want the opuimim power from V-tec, and a harsh bass rumble would ne nice....wish it could sound like the V8 of Starsky and Hutch...neways I would like a smoothish power curve aswell.
Also what boost in power at the flywheel could I expect? (kw if you could but I'll do the conversions if U cant be bothered)
I think Iv included enough info.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
Thanx in advance!!

Ive always been an Apexi N1 Fan. Good tone, and its straight thru, its what i have and im pretty pleased. Also, if you are not talking about headers, why are you giving 4-1 or 4-2-1 questions? 5ths gens only use 4-2-1 due to clearence issues, not sure on 4th gens. Just remember, you get what you pay for. If u go for some expensive custom made headers, you will be happy. DC sucks
I don't think anyone knows what you mean mean by extractor. We have a header or exhaust manifold. For the exhaust, optimum piping diameter for an otherwise stock H22 is generally 2.25-2.36"OD. If you have bigger plans for the motor, step up to 2.5"OD.
Header brands to look into include DC Sports, eBay knock-offs, Greddy, Mugen, AN-R, Prospeed, Hytech, and SMSP. There's probably a dozen different off-the-shelf cat-back exhaust systems available.
Just remember, even if you upgrade the header & exhaust, you'll still have a bottleneck at the stock catalytic converter where it pinches down in diameter. Car-sound, Catco, and Random Tech are common suppliers of high-flow cats.
For the entire header/cat/exhaust system . . . Depending on the combination, pay anywhere from $500 to $2300 (USD) & expect anywhere from 5 to 25 horsepower on an otherwise stock H22.

Thanx, this gives me a good idea.
I thought that headers were simply fatter pipes, where as extractors were tuned to a certain rev range to 'extract' the exaust gasses from the engine much more efficiently than headers, to give a large power boost in a small rev range.

Dunno about price / fitment to your car, pick up a yellow pages and ring around......
Are you talking about extractors or headers ?
The tubular pipes that most exhaust shops sell are Headers, basically just a much more efficient way of getting the exhaust out of the cylinder (you can tell by looking at them!)
they have a very mild scavenging effect and usually add a couple of Hp at the top end, and a small whack of torque at the mid-range..
extractors are a very different kettle of fish, while they look similar, they are TUNED to a particular ENGINE and REV RANGE .....
THey are very complex to work out and get right, we're talking about primary tube diameter / length - secondary diameter /length and so forth.....
they work in a very narrow rev range (usually about 7/8ths of redline) and can adda massive amount of power IN THAT REV RANGE ONLY outside that rev range, they are usually no better than headers.....
Headers are cheap
extractors are EXPENSIVE (I'm talking 4-5x price of headers!!)
Good Luck

...I think thats how U do a quote...
I think I'll save up some more and get a custom job done with a 2.5" all the way. I'll try to get them tuned to lust after V-tec kicks in...does anyone know what rpm this would be on my car, I have looked before but its hard to tell exactly where.
