Heel and toe downshiftin
How do I modify my brake and gas pedal to accommodate heel and toe down shifting. I had to do this a lot with sporty cars that I drove in the 60's. Is it necessary with the R? Any recommendations?
most guys use aftermarket pedal attachements. These just clamp or screw on top of the stock pedals.
I"ve found the stock pedals to be just fine for heel'n toe'ing though.

I prefer to modify the driver rather than the car.
It takes me a few minutes to get used to most cars, but after a few downshifts, I can usually figure out how to heel-toe smoothly. I've got 9 and a half shoes, and it seems to be fine for all the cars I've tried. S2000, ITR, Prelude, BMW's, Audis, Sentras, and other cars I'm forgetting.

Avg. Sized feet should be able to reach both pedals. At most the pedals are 4" apart, from your "heel" to your "toe" MUST be longer than 4".
Poor mans solution: Bend your pedals closer together

I wear a size 11 and I have no problem in my GSR. What kind of car do you have? Maybe the pedals are further apart?
In any vehicle you cannot tell me that the pedals are further apart than the length of your entire foot "heel" to "toe". I actually prefer rolling my foot to the right to rev instead of "heel and toe'ing"... Maybe I should make you guys some educational videos
yeah they got big shoes... lol

Im a 12.5-13 (US) also, but ive found the correct shoe makes a huge difference.
Dress shoes are realtively thin, but dont have the right 'flex' or feel. Athletic shoes are a little more flexible but are thicker. I have a pair of Piloti shoes that work good, for $90 they arent cheap but less than true race shoes.
Another option which may be the best in terms of cost/benefit ratio is a pair of wrestling shoes. These are thin enough, have great feel, and only ~$50!

Yup shoes make a great difference... I can't do H&T very well with running or crosstraining shoes on (size 13) heels are too big and the "feel" is off.
Even cheaper alternative - Converse All Stars... I dug a pair out of the closet and they are quite good for free.
Oh, and the Mugen pedals rock...

Welcome Mr. Tankerous,
Glad to see a new member!
I just ordered some OMP 1863 pedals to assist in that process. I'm just into Auto-X and am concentrating on how to really control my car!
The link to one of their distributors is: http://www.ompusa.com/pedals.htm
God luck, and wonder if and how much older than I you are?

Just pratice alot. I've done it so much that it is second nature now. I have no after market pedals and size 9.5 and I can heal toe all day with no problems.
im a size 13...and its not easy to heel toe on the stock pedals....
am i doing something wrong? I feel like i have club feet when i heel toe, primarily because my foot is so huge. and I dont want to hear about the "you know what they say about big feet" crap

Is this the correct way to heel-toe?

Because that seems absolutely impossible to me. I can see doing it the other way with your right foot (swivel to the left), but the way they show it...my gas pedal is too far "down" compared to the brake...it feels awkward.

I have a tough time turning my foot to the left far enough to use the heel to blip the gas. I use 2/3 of the toe-area on the brake and blip the gas with the right side of my foot. This works well for me and I'm getting better with practice (to and from work!). I like the greater "feel" with the front of my foot as opposed to the heel area. I also have after market pedals that have the additional piece to extend the gas pedal and shorten the gap between the two. Of course, it seems the harder you brake, the more effective the whole process is because then the brake and gas are more on the same level. It just seems like it doesnt work as well during casual driving (whice I sometimes try). Makes sense though because most people dont heel-toe pulling into Blockbuster.
I can't do it.
Well, I can't do it with any shoes that I've got. There is no way in hell that my feet will rotate 180deg to the left and perform the trick. I suppose I could get some clown shoes to do the trick, but I'll pass. Will pick up some pedals to achieve the feat.

that link doesnt work.. would like to see that video.
obviously there are a number of ppl who dont know how to heel and toe. I dug out some old Civic Type-R videos I had from vtec.net. And I'LL host them for a day or two, before I take them off my server, so get them now - Do not get more than one at a time too plz.

All of these show a professional driver using a heel and toe technique to brake and rev match at the same time.
