Default GSR Head better for ls/vtec on low budget?

I have been reading articles...searching,etc.I would like too either do a ls-vtec swap or all motor ls.The dyno's with the all motor ls are not exactly the greatest. However i am only aiming for 170 ish hp.I would like too know if the gsr head and cams would be better for a ls vtec or would the b16 head be better? This is going too be a stock ls/vtec for quite some time. One thing though if i do get the gsr i will just get the head and a skunk2 manifold.Would be goal of 170 be out of range on a stock block and head?I also noticed that a gsr head raises compression. This is good since i will be on stock pistons.I already will have a free flowing exhaust and intake.Thank You

from what i have seen the gsr head is slightly quicker when everything is 100% stock

I've heard that the B16 head is slighty ported and polished from the factory being that it is the same casting that is used on ITR's... This supposedly makes it flow better, but I've never tested either and don't know for sure... The GSR head does raise compression due to welded chambers for a smaller quench area, but the GSR intake manifold kinda sucks...

Your best bet is GSR head with Skank2 IM...

i would say b16 head with some cheap gsr cams. more flow and the same lift and duration as a gsr

On a budget... on the market the b16 head sells cheaper.

Well i have found the gsr head on ebay anywhere from 200-450 for head alone.Plus skunk2 intake manifold another 200.So im looking around 400-650.I have seen full b16 heads around for 500-800.I think i may just get the gsr head and go with the skunk2 manifold.I think with the gsr cams and higher compression the gsr manifold will get better results.

Also would this get me my goal of 170 hp?Heres my setup
Stock b18b bottom end.
Stock GSR head
skunk2 im
65mm tb or bigger if it will help
dc 4-2-1 header
carsound cat
dc exhaust
cheapo intake
and a b16 tranny
I know the tranny wont help hp but do you think it will make around 170 hp.Thats my goal for now

That's gonna be pretty tough... I have an LS/VTEC with ITR pistons and cams, stock IM, Hondata and some other goodies and pulled 170whp and 131wtq... You're gonna have to upgrade the internals to hit 170...

This will end up being your problem when you say you dont have any power.

B16 head flows more between .250-.450 lifts. Better top end than the GSR head.

maybe you just heard wrong; it's the ITR head that is the same casting as the b16 but is slightly ported/polished.

gsr head will give you about .5 more compression than b16 head.

gsr head has pentroof style chambers, not welded chambers..
(you will have th weld the b16 head and get them redone pentroof style, but gsr has steeper intake ports or something..so gsr still better)

there is also a dyno on http://www.importreview.com with a competition ported n polished b16 head vs. a stock gsr head on the same LS/vtec setup...gsr head won.

super budget? gsr head, CTR cams, portflow valvetrain (itr outters, portflow inners), LS block with LS rods with ARP bolts, JDM ITR pistons, skunk2 IM..obd1 gsr ecu/type r ecu with mugen program and a apex vtec controller..basic bolt ons..tune that puppy..
get some good power from it..

competition B16 headwork vs. competition GSR headwork.

what racer isn't going to get their head ported? =P

you draw your own conclusions from the graph.

Flow bench numbers dont mean a whole lot...

Theres a reason the majority of the top running b series guys run GSR heads
