A big ruler/straightedge works, too.
The special tool is actualyl pretty cool, though. Like a giant philips head screwdriver to connect to a wrench.

See... the reset tool didn't work for me. My caliper was stuck, so my brake was constantly on. The piston was out so far that the tool wouldn't slide into place. We had to use the pliers to get it to turn.

You can buy the tool from sears for like i think it is 20bucks or so just the easiest things to do IMO, instead of struggling w/ doing it w/ makeshift tools/.

I'd like to know your detailed write-up on how you use a c-clamp..then i'll start using one.

if you use a C-clamp on the rear, you will destroy the screw that makes the ebrake work, and will distroy the caliper
As for the special little tool, there is one called a brake cube. It really sucks. basicly what you do is it has 6 diffrent patterns. You find the pattern of piston you have, stick it in the slots, then with a ratchet, you spin it. I HATE them. They are just as a bitch to use as the needle nose pliars method. They always slip out of the groves so its worthless.
