I got my CRX painted at Maaco 2 years ago. I did it around the end of winter (Beginning of March) because they have their half price sale at that time. That way, I got the $1,000 paint job for $500.
The paint itself came out great. However, I had overspray everywhere--my engine bay, my hatch lid, my dash, my rear windows, and my exhaust--Needless to say, it was a pain in the ***.
Bottom line, I suggest you do the prep work yourself. Mask off what you don't want to get painted, and be sure to tell them what you don't want painted. Reiterate it several times to make sure they have it right.
Granted, each Maaco is different; some are better than others. The one i went to (Trenton, NJ on Prospect Street) is considered above average.
You get what you pay for in this instance. Don't expect a flawless $2000 job that a professional paint and body shop would give you. However, if you make sure to tell them what you do, and what you do not want done, and if you do a little of the prep work yourself, you'll be in much better shape. Good luck
