Default help - billowing smoke from tail pipe

I have a turbo'd '94 GS-R. Anyway, today I checked the oil and noticed it was pretty low (just bought the car last week, so this is the 1st time I've checked it). Low being the first dot. I added a tiny bit (maybe 1.5 quart) to get me to Wal-Mart then bought a 5-quart jug of Mobil 1 fully syn. I added maybe 3.75-4 quarts. Right after doing this, as soon as I pulled out of the driveway, I look in my rearview mirror to see a huge cloud of billowing smoke coming from my tailpipe. It was a whitish smoke, and increases as I press the gas. I am thinking I may have overfilled it with oil, as when I checked the dipstick it was well (maybe 1/4 inch) over the full dot. I took it easy getting it 2 miles home. Just wondering if too much oil is my problem here, guessing that it is the oil burning off. Wondering if this has any harmful effects on the turbo or engine itself. In the morning I'm just gonna drain the oil out and change the filter and fill it up again. Any suggestions, comments?
Thanks

Sounds like your rings maybe shot. Did you get a compression test before you bought the car?

You added way too much oil... Do an oil change and put about 4.25 quarts in and your smoke should go away... If it doesn't, check the return line for any kinks, and if that's okay, then you might wanna do a compression test...

so you were at the bottom hole, put in 1.5 quarts, then 3.75-4 more? If so, you have WAAAAY too much oil in there. The distance between the two dots signifies 1 quart.

Don't mix conventional and synthetic either... From what i've heard, once you go Syn, you can't go back.

yeah do a complete oil change and if it still smokes after about 5-10 minutes its probably time for new piston rings

you put syntetic in, with how many miles? if its alot, you can say more oil consumption.

also, it is a HUGE pain in the *** trying to jack up the car to drain the oil (and change filter while i'm under there), as i need to drive it up onto two sets of 2x4s then jack it up. anyway, just wondering if it would be ok (safe) to drive it 3 miles down the road where i can just put it on a lift that will be much easier for changing oil. ie: if i drove it slow and kept revs low, what are any negative effects of driving it there?
thanks
