I don't see any leaking around the head. all i see is a lot of white smoke out of the exhaust when i do hard driving. normal driving i don't see any white smoke. the temp gauge reads normal. what does burning coolant smell like?

its a real heavy thick white smoke out the exhaust and has a sweet smell to it. white smoke w/ a blue tint to it is oil and it'll smell like burning oil. best thing to do is watch the temp gauge, watch the water level, and make sure no water is gettin in oil (oil will come out a milky brown color).

the white smoke was thick and i think it might of had a blueish tint to it, i'm not sure it was a little dark out. there was a burning smell but i'm not sure what burning oil smells like. can running lean cause thick white smoke? b/c a while ago i was having cel code 45 which is too rich or too lean.
can a compression & leak down test tell you if you have a blown headgasket?

take off ur oil cap and look at the inside if theres a white sludge then ur in trouble and then open ur rad cap (when the car is cool) and look at the fluid if its the same then u have a problem
leak down will help, but yes, burning white can also be lean, it wont have a burnt oil smell to it. you probably know what burnt oil smells like, everytime you do an oil change some oil probably gets on the exhaust and it has to burn off, that smell right after you do an oil change is the oil burning off. thats the smell you should be looking for out of your exhaust. white smoke with a normal smell to it (carbon monoxide smell) will be lean, black smoke is rich.

Question? Would u notice it in the oil when u r changing it?

It smells like skunk or really good pot.

i know my car is running lean, the spark plugs are white and the ecu is throwing a running lean code. but i didn't think it was normal when i saw huge clouds of white smoke coming from the exhaust. could a lean condition have that much white smoke?

not sure.. i do my own compression tests. i gotta buy a leakdown tester.. all you need is a compressed air supply for it.. i dunno how much PSI you need tho as i have not acually done one yet.

We blew the head gasket out on my friends Jeep on the hiway. It overheated all the way on the gauge, we could hear coolant boiling over, stank like all hell, white smoke was pouring out from under the hood. That was awful.. we were 200 miles from home in the middle of nowhere, IL.

what's involved with doing a leakdown test? i live in new brunswick.
i checked my oil cap & oil stem and didn't see any milkyness. I opened up the radiator cap and the coolant was filled to the top. I did not see any coolant in the overflow tank.

putting each cylinder on TDC and pressurizing it with compressed air. That's basically what it's about.

i am in the same boat I just rebuilt my engine and put ctr pistons in new head gasket and arp head studs and now white smoke now someone said it could also be to lean. i don't have it tuned yet. so i am sure that is what it is.
white spark plugs = lean. average shop charges $75 hour diagnostic fee, so leak down will cost about 50-75. if running lean, check fuel filter, then test fuel pressure, then start worryin about injectors if all those check out.
