Default New Guy here and have a question

I am working on my daughters 89 Acura Integra, what i am doing is replacing all 4 of the struts/shocks,anyway they dont have the springs so is there anything special about doing this. The car has 245,000 miles and still runs great, after a long and head aching experience with the coolant temp sensor. this car was passed down from my oldest daughter, she bought new. I have done ALOT of work to this car in the past 3 years and i want to do a little more before i turn my other daughter loose. I may need to cjange he front HUB BEARINGS but i am going to do the struts first. $168.00 bucks for 4 shocks. now i know why I am a CHEVY NUT. but of coarse, you know teenagers. Thanx in advance for any help you can give Jeff

Im not exactly sure what you need help on... decompressing the stock springs?...that's one method.

personally id use spring compressors. other than that it should be pretty straight forward.

here's a writeup on suspension swap for a civic si, but it will be very similar on the teg.

Now isnt he a nice dad, Getting on the hondatech to help keep his daughters car up to maintence.....Sounds like my dad with my sisters..hehe

I was having a hard time understanding what you wanted as well. The hardest part would be to decompress the springs to take them off of the strut. Heres a walk through from what Ive remembered

jack the car up (fron or rear, which ever your doing first)
take the tires off
undo the strut bolts in the engine bay/turnk (2 per side)
I had coiloveres so i just undid the bolt on the wishfork lookin thing and the strut poped right off. Im thinking you need to decompress the spring and then loosen the bolt on the wish fork thing. installation is reverse. SHould give you a good idea; and Im sure I left out some things but hey you work on chevys this couldnt be too hard for you to do. Dont those things break down every 60k lol Im just messin with ya!
Good Luck and I hope that helped somewhat

well, you should be able to take the old ones off pretty easy, just loosen and take off the strut bolts that mount in the engine bay or trunk area(which ever you are doing first), then jack the car up slightly, remove the wheel, and then you will have the upper mounts removed and the spring ready to be taken off...installation CANNOT be done in the reverse of this.
P.S. the car would serve as the sring compressor for removal.

http://www.g1teg.org Hopefully this can help you. 89 Integras are great cars. Sure they don't have Rat motor power, but they are a definite better handler.

Ok, this dont have any springs on the STRUT. I pulled one from the box and they are just like shocks.

You have to put a spring over the shock, Honda's use coil-over suspensions. Not the adjustable coil-overs like many people know them as, coil-over as in the coil goes over the shock itself. I know some VW's along as trucks I've seen that use the independant spring and shock setup.

If you are using the stock springs with the new shocks then you will need a spring compressor to be able to assemble them. If you are installing lowering springs then you should be able to install the top-mount without compressing the spring.

Nobody is answering this question correctly and it's frustrating me so I hope this helps.

Assuming you're not already done. Once you've disconnected the entire strut there's a spring on there already. You need spring compressors (my friend and I rented some from an Autozone), compress the spring (pretty simple tool), unscrew the top take the compressed spring off the strut, put it on the other strut, reverse the whole process and you're done.

His main question was why did the new strut not have a spring and nobody payed attention to that it seemed sorry >_<#

Are these replacement shocks/struts OEM or aftermarket?

the springs rarely need changing so youre good to go with those. Since you ahve the suspension out, you may want to consider replacing the bumpstops and other bushings. They are relatively inexpensive but worth the extra few minutes in doing so in the long run.

Best of luck on the upgrade.

well I dont know what the deal is with these, but the car nor the new ones have sprins. They are just basically shocks. I have already changed the m and everything went well. The car does not have front coil springs at all. There are some on the rear but none at all on the front.
