Default About JDM Final drive (DID SEARCH)

Searched through the archived posts and couldn't find anything useful to me.

A friend is changing his FD to ATS 4.9 so he's going to give me the drive shaft and crown wheel off his car (jdm 98 spec)

Can i convert my 4.4 final drive to 4.785 final drive with just the drive shaft and crown wheel off a 98 spec JDM ITR?

That means no first gear, lsd ring gear and other stuff that comes with the kit.

you need the jdm 1st gear, diffy ring gear, and a b18c/b16b diff; b16a or b18b diffs are smaller and have different bolt spacing.

if he's changing his fd, why is he keeping the 98-01 jdm diffy ring gear and giving you the shaft ? (ambivalence intended)

Hes giving me the 4.7 ringgear and countershaft.

My gearbox is 96/97 spec JDM ITR (my car obviously) so we reckon that i already have a JDM first gear and similar

Basically, i'm not sure if my jdm gearbox is the same as usdm gearbox

That's why i am trying to find out if i need the 4.785 kit or just the ring gear and countershaft since i already have JDM first gear (96 spec) and collar etc..

that's all that you need, and you'll prolly still pull him in 4th & 5th if your engines are similar, since your 4,5 gears are closer.

iirc:

.....you will need the ring gear, the pinion, the jdm 98+ first gear (as it is the same ratio, but fits on the shaft differently), the two needle bearings, and the distance collar.

jdm 96 spec tranny = usdm 97+ itr tranny. Shitty 4.4 final, and closer 4th and 5th gears.....

Your friend should really just straight up trade you trannies and replace the 4.4 with the 4.9, OR just get the ats 3,4,5 gearset for the 98+ tranny.

He's changing to an ats 4.9 final drive kit (which includes longer 5th gear)

I will just get the 1st gear, needle bearing and dist. collar from his dealer in japan.
