Default dust boots on struts/coilovers necessary?

just wondering how many people are driving around with no dust boots on their struts/coilovers. I'm running dust boots in the front of my n1 coilovers but removed them i the rear because of a knocking noise that went away when I took them off in the rear. Is there any adverse effects in the long run by not using the boots?

Anyone else not using dust boots? I got skunk2 shocks and springs with no dust boots, is there a DIY method that can be used?

Thanks
